T
eam Moto-Electra set a world
record last week, the Thad
Wolff-led team riding its electric
Moto-Electra motorcycle from
Jacksonville, Florida to Santa
Monica, California, in 84.5
hours.
The trip was made on a standard-style bike (the Moto-Electra)
based on the Norton Featherbed
design. The Moto-Electra has
had great success in GP events
(TTXGP), holds one land-speed
record and won the first sanctioned gas vs. electric race in the
U.S. The only equipment failure
was a throttle that needed to be
replaced, but the motor, controller and batteries were perfect,
according to the team.
"At the turn of the 20th century,
gasoline powered vehicles were
useless for long distance travel,"
says Brian Richardson builder
and Moto Electra team manager.
"There were no roads, no filling
stations, and the vehicles were
not dependable. Gas-powered
vehicles could never replace the
horse for long-distance travel.
Fast forward 100 years, and our
goal is to challenge perceptions
about the useful range of electric
vehicles. We did just that. I think
it's only a matter of time when
charging stations will allow cross
country travel by anyone with an
electric vehicle."
