LOOKING BACK
across time, across the country,
across life and across death, it's
something that has always been
uniquely and unmistakably ours.
Another night, in another dream,
I found myself alone in the desert, right where our family always
camped in California City. The sun
hung low in the sky, barely above
the horizon and the smell of creosote lightly scented the air. I could
hear nothing but the coarse dirt
crunching beneath my boots as I
walked toward a shadowy figure
seated on the ground, legs outstretched, leaning back on his
hands. It was my dad. I didn't see
his face, but it was him.
Without a word, I came and sat
on the ground beside him. We never looked at each other or spoke;
we simply sat side-by-side and enjoyed the tranquil desert evening.
The sun crept below the horizon,
but we lingered just a bit longer,
wanting to savor our silent intimacy
and the tranquil desert twilight. The
last bits of orange melted away and
the sky changed to shades of blue
and then purple before deepening
its hue enough to reveal stars. My
dad stayed still, but I knew it was
time to go. Without a word, I stood
up and walked away.
Just as in life, my dreams never
involve us actually riding together,
but the spirit of it is what we continue to share. Our dream visits are
always very vivid, and very short.
One thing I've noticed is that I never say goodbye even though I'm
the one who walks away. Perhaps
because it's never over.

In a seemingly bizarre move, Suzuki and Kawasaki combined efforts to produce their first
(and same) 250cc four-stroke production motocrosser, the RM-Z250 and KX250F. Suzuki
developed the motor, Kawasaki the chassis.
Both were featured on the cover… Ricky Carmichael went 1-1 at Southwick. Craig Anderson topped the 125s.
