USSELL TURNED UP THE HEAT AGAIN
WITH HIS SECOND WIN IN A ROW
VOL. 50 ISSUE 24 JUNE 18, 2013

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEN HILL
T
he rain and rugged terrain
were no match for Kailub
Russell, as he took his
FMF/KTM to the center of the
podium for the second time in a
row. The victory allowed Russell
to get a little closer to his teammate FMF/KTM Charlie Mullins
in the series championship. It's
now down to five points with still
plenty of racing left.
Mullins would visit the podium
but not in his more customary position. He ended up third after a
grueling three-hour dual with several XC1 Pro riders that all challenged for a podium spot at several times during the race.
Josh Strang would add some
color to the podium, as he put
his Rocky Mountain ATV-M/C
Kawasaki solidly on the box with
runner-up honors.
The Mountaineer Run is becoming another venue that can
really put racers to the test, as the
terrain is unforgiving, boasting
deep mud holes along the rocky,
slick and root-infested trails. Rain
pummeled the region in the days
leading up to the event and even
fell throughout race day.
Russell had to work things out
right from the start, as he found
himself near last as the XC1 Pro
field exited turn one. A few turns
Kailub Russell (pictured) gained
a few more precious points on
series leader Charlie Mullins after
winning again.
