IN
THE
WIND
ner-up Ken De Dycker, on
the factory KTM. In round
two, Paulin pretty much
led from start to finish
but had to fight off homecrowd favorite Antonio
Cairoli the entire way.
Cairoli, who was hoping to nab his 60th-career
GP win at the famed site
in front of the massive
Italian crowd, struggled
with a couple of crashes
in the first moto, one of
which injured his knee.
He managed to work his
way up to second before
falling again and finishing
fourth. Sporting a heavily
taped knee in the second
moto, he chased Paulin
the entire way but had to
settle for second and third
overall.
De Dycker ended up
second overall with a 2-3.
Desalle was in a good
position to take the overall win after topping the
first moto, but a mechanical problem sidelined up
during the second and
he was credited with 10th
overall.
Herlings had little difficulties in winning the MX2
class. The factory-backed
KTM rider took command
by the halfway point of the
first moto and then ran off
with the win. In the second moto, he got to the
front much earlier and
again stormed off, keeping his perfect season of
overall wins intact.
Spain's Jose Butron
(KTM) finished second
overall, followed by Italy's
Alessandro Lupino (Kawasaki) and France's Jordi
Tixier (KTM).
THE SOCIAL FIGHT
FOR OCOTILLO
O
ff-road racer Desiree
Bates didn't exactly plan
on becoming the name and
the face of the fight to keep
Ocotillo Wells open, but things
kind of worked out that way
when she found thousands
of people rallying behind her
Facebook page, "Fight For
Ocotillo Wells!" (https://www.
Gautier Paulin took top honors in the MX1
class at Maggiora.
facebook.com/groups/FightForOcotilloWells/)
"I was just trying to get the
word out," Bates said. "But
since I started the Facebook
group, they've wanted me in
on meetings with EcoLogic
and District 37 because there's
now over 4000 people in this
group. They just want to rally
people together, people from
the press, from Districts 37 and
38 – groups that have a large
impact on getting the word
out to the off-road community.
Each week we have a meeting
now and we're trying to organize everything, and start fundraising efforts as soon as the
state decides to fight this."
