Kocinski's 500 Sold At Auction
T
he Mecum Auction held on
May 1 saw a massive array
of collectible motorcycles up
for auction, but one in particular
caught our attention.
Sold for $104,500 was the
Cagiva V593 that John Kocinski
raced to victory at Laguna Seca
in the 1993 American Grand Prix.
Kocinski was drafted into the
Cagiva squad in late 1993 at the
Czech Republic Grand Prix after
losing his ride with Kenny Rob-
erts' factory Yamaha team at the
end of 1992. He went on to take
fourth in the Czech Republic and
Misano rounds and capped his
return to grand prix racing by tak-
ing a six-second win in front of his
home crowd at Laguna Seca, the
race following Wayne Rainey's
tragic accident.
The machine is notable as
it was the second Cagiva mo-
torcycle to win a 500cc grand
prix and the first to do so in dry
weather after Eddie Lawson took
the factory's maiden win in the
wet 1992 Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Cagiva V593 was not the
last Cagiva to win a 500cc grand
prix. Kocinski won the opening
race of the 1994 season at East-
ern Creek in Australia. Cagiva
pulled out of grand prix racing at
the end of 1994, citing budgetary
concerns.
