We featured a Cycle News project bike—a 490cc Maico built for TT
racing—on the cover 40 years ago. Our test rider, Rod Spencer, raced it
in a TT National at Ascot and finished in the top five after having hopped on
the bike for the first time that day... Scot Harden and Brent Wallingsford
teamed up and won the Las Vegas 400... Troy Blake and Mouse McCoy
were the big winners at the NMA World Mini Grand Prix held at Saddleback
Park... We took a closer look at new suspension technology, mainly the
upside-down fork.

A photo of Cal Rayborn leading the way at Road Atlanta was pictured on
the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Rayborn, however, wasn't the
winner. Kel Carruthers came away with the victory... First-year expert
John Hately scored his first main-event win at Ascot, passing two riders
on the last lap before taking the checkers... J.N. Roberts came away
with the overall win in the Southern California desert near Four Corners
in California. Whitey Martino finished first but missed a check, handing
Roberts the victory.
