Briefly...
This year, the Sportsman bikes and
ATVs bypassed The Summit. At
mile 101, they headed to Jamau,
down the "goat trail," and onto
Highway 3 where they rejoined
the "Pro" course at mile 230 on
the road up to Mike's Sky Ranch
near San Matias. With safety in
mind, this was done to help keep
the Sportsman from being mixed in
with the Trophy trucks and Class 1
cars, but it also created some controversy, as it put them ahead of the
Pro-class bikes. David Kamo said
he had to pass an estimated 20 riders the last part of the race.
Lorena Galvan, a Sportsman finisher from Ensenada, teamed with
Jose Corona and was the only
female entrant in the motorcycle
class.
Scott Myers, a Mike Prunty team
rider, hit a car being driven on the
course shortly after the start of the
race, causing major plastic damage, but he and the bike were able
to continue for the Class-40 win
with co-riders Sterlyn Rigsby and
Bob Johnson.
Jim O'Neal was going for a 17thclass win but had to settle for a
second in Class 21. Also on the
bike were Ricky Brabec, Roberto
Villalobos and Max Eddy. Unfortunately for them, their bike seized
just before the finish and Eddy had
to push it across the line.
