Triumph Unveils New Electric Concept T riumph has unveiled sketch- es of the new electric motor- cycle they are developing with Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Ltd.'s e-Drive Division, and WMG, at the Uni- versity of Warwick in Coventry, England. Dubbed the TE-1 and look- ing very much like the famed Speed Triple, the project has reached stage two of four and some details are beginning to emerge. Triumph is claiming 180 hp from an electric powertrain that weighs a claimed 22 lb, however, as interesting as that is, Triumph is focusing more energy on how they reduce the overall packaging of the power unit with partners Williams Engineering. We have focused on pushing the boundaries to reduce mass and optimize frame position to benefit handling. We have also pushed the limits of battery per- formance, balancing the design for acceleration and range, with simulations modeled on track- based riding. In other words, as aggressive as possible," said Dyrr Ardash, Senior Commercial Manager, Williams Advanced Engineering. "The energy den- sity of this new battery will be a significant step forward from ex- isting technology giving the rider more power, for longer. WAE has also designed and developed an electronic control unit from the ground-up, combining the battery management system with the bike control functions in one package. This is a first for this market, benefiting packaging and integration while optimizing performance and range." The motor and inverter have been designed as one unit and will be housed in a traditional aluminum chassis like the Speed Triple, with a working prototype aimed for completion during stage three of the project. CN IN THE WIND P48 Triumph's new TE-1 looks a spicy meatball, indeed.
