New Yamaha
Sport Bike Range
Coming?
I
t looks as though Yamaha is planning a thorough
overhaul of their sport-bike range following the
demise of the YZF-R6 in 2020.
In new CARB documents filed by the com-
pany, Yamaha will be bringing an MT-07-derived
689cc twin-cylinder sport bike to market next year,
dubbed the YZF-R7 (we know, we know… we don't
like the R7 name being used for this bike, either).
However, this is not a sufficient replacement to the
R6 and, in a story published by our colleagues at
Motorcycle.com, Yamaha has filed a trademark for
a new Yamaha YZF-R9, which would use the MT-
09 890cc three-cylinder motor.
Then there's talk of bikes that already exist in
Yamaha's lineup but are not imported here, bikes
such as the YZF-R15 (150cc), YZF-R20 and 25
(200 and 250cc). Yamaha's YZF-R3 is now a bit
long in the tooth and no longer competitive in
Junior Cup racing around the world against the
400cc Kawasaki, and Yamaha has indeed trade-
marked the YZF-R4 name as well, indicating a
400cc junior sport bike might be in the cards.
It's unlikely, however, that all these bikes would
come in one year. For now, bet on the R7 turning
up for 2021, and possibly the R9 to go alongside
the already here YZF-R1 and R1M, and YZF-R3. CN
Yamaha's venerable
YZF-R1M looks like
it's going to get a
bunch of new siblings
in the near future.
