LOOKING BACK
Motorcycles, well, sort of, took part in the Long Beach GP 40 years ago,
and we pictured the winning three-wheeler team of Larry Coleman and
Mark Bevans... Mark Barnett scored back-to-back wins at the Houston
Astrodome doubleheader Supercross... We covered round two of the AMA
Superbike Championship at Talladega. Freddie Spencer was the big
winner over Eddie Lawson and Wes Cooley... We featured an interview
with New Zealand road racer Graeme Crosby and Irish trials rider Sammy
Miller, who had just created his own Miller trials bike.

The movie On Any Sunday, which was financially backed by actor Steve
McQueen, made its premier 50 years ago at Paramount Studios in
Hollywood. Cycle News attended what was a short 16-minute introduction
just for the media, and we gave it a good review, saying it should "wipe the
sour taste of The Wild One from the mouths of America." The full-length film
was set to be released a few months later... Danny LaPorte, having just
moved up to the "big" bikes, smoked the 100cc Juniors at Indian Dunes MX.

KTM, won the sandy GNCC opener at
Okeechobee 20 years ago. (Right) Fifteen-
year-old Damon Huffman set the fastest
lap time at the GNC International MX at
Lake Whitney 30 years ago.
