Mark Barnett was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago for
winning the Atlanta Supercross at Fulton County Stadium. Also pictured on
the cover was Dick Burleson from the Stone Mountain National Enduro in
Georgia. Mike Melton, however, was the overall winner... We interviewed
AMA Superbike Champion hopeful Eddie Lawson... We also had a
preview of the 1981 Daytona 200 and Daytona Supercross... On the test
bike front, we threw a leg over the 1981 Husqvarna 430 CR motocrosser,
which sold for $2685.

We featured photos from the Elsinore Grand prix on the cover of Cycle
News 50 years ago. It was the fourth running of the 100-mile race and
John DeSoto captured his second victory... A few television and movie
stars switched gears and headed to Indian Dunes for some motocross
fun, skipping the Lake Elsinore GP. Steve McQueen, Paul Newman
and James Garner all came out to play in the dirt... The Winter-AMA
MX Series played out in Tallahassee, Florida, where Gunner Lindstrom
topped Gary Bailey for the 250cc win, and Bryan Keeny beat out
Jimmy Weinert for the Open-class win.
