P106 50 Years Ago MARCH 16, 1971 LOOKING BACK Mark Barnett was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago for winning the Atlanta Supercross at Fulton County Stadium. Also pictured on the cover was Dick Burleson from the Stone Mountain National Enduro in Georgia. Mike Melton, however, was the overall winner... We interviewed AMA Superbike Champion hopeful Eddie Lawson... We also had a preview of the 1981 Daytona 200 and Daytona Supercross... On the test bike front, we threw a leg over the 1981 Husqvarna 430 CR motocrosser, which sold for $2685. 40 Years Ago MARCH 11, 1981 Mark Barnett winning the Atlanta Supercross at Fulton County Stadium. It was the fourth running of the 100-mile race and John DeSoto captured his second victory... A few television and movie stars switched gears and headed to Indian Dunes for some motocross fun, skipping the Lake Elsinore GP. Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and James Garner all came out to play in the dirt... The Winter-AMA MX Series played out in Tallahassee, Florida, where Gunner Lindstrom topped Gary Bailey for the 250cc win, and Bryan Keeny beat out Jimmy Weinert for the Open-class win. Years Ago (Right) We featured an interview with road racer Aaron Slight 20 years ago. Scott Summers won the AMA Hare Scrambles Championship opener in Texas 30 years ago.
