RIES
While Saturday's race was exciting enough, Sunday's was full
of drama. First there was a massive pileup crash that started 100
yards up the track and ended
up with bikes and riders strewn
all over the front straight. It appeared Ricardo Valdez got out of
shape near the front of the pack,
setting off a chain reaction. AMA
Pro Racing officials reported Tyler Linders, Hayden Gillim, Ricardo Valdez, Caroline Olsen,
Roi Holster, Shawn Hill and Alex
Shaw were the riders who went
down in the crash. All were reported later in the day to be alert
and responsive.
The race, held hours later,
came down to a riveting five-rider last-lap dash to the flag and it
was Alexander getting the win in
a photo finish. Mesa was second
and Puerta third. Travis Wyman
and Tigert were the other riders

in the lead pack.
"It was an awesome race,"
Alexander said. "It was kind of
down to the finish line. Nobody
knew where we were going to
end up… at least I didn't.
"Coming out of five Tomas and
I bumped a little bit. I tried to go to
the outside of him and he pushed
me a little wide. Then somebody
else got in front of me and before I knew it I was back in fourth
place. Going into the carousel I
made my way around Stefano,
then passed Travis Wyman on the
inside going into the chicane and
then followed Tomas all the way
up to the last turn. I just hoped I
timed the draft well enough that I
could pull around him for the win.
There was a freight train behind
me. I didn't know where I was going to end up – I could have been
first, I could have been fifth." CN
