VOL. 50 ISSUE 22 JUNE 4, 2013 a digital cover shot in Cycle News and the first to have a digital cover on a monthly (Racer X). He was a sponge for information and he wasn't selfish about sharing what he knew. TFS was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who asked, even his competition. When Scott Kandel and I founded our Wonder Warthog Racing privateer support programs, TFS hauled our trailer behind his rig to every race for years and asked for nothing in return. He was a big part of helping me with my Big Air Kid's Fair charity event at Loma Linda Children's Hospital and although he never said so, I think he regretted never having kids of his own. I remember when Steve came back to my house from the Supercross Series awards banquet in 2003 and he proudly showed me the Humanitarian of the Year award he had won. I jokingly said, "They'll give that award to any Fat Bastard, won't they?" This proved to be true when I received the same award a year later for our WWR effort. Bruhn was given the award again a couple of years later, and he liked to remind me about him being the only two-time winner. It was all part of his evil plan, he said… Steve eventually found his way back to the aviation industry, but he left a mark on the motocross world that will never be forgotten. After years of frustration with being overweight, he fixed a hormonal imbalance and lost over 100 pounds. I rarely ran into him, but when our paths crossed we greeted each other with our standard, "Hey, fat bastard," to which he proudly declared himself a former fat bastard. Steve Bruhn was buried in his hometown on Monday, May 13 with many family and friends in attendance. During my four hour drive from the Atlanta Airport to Ozark, Alabama, I couldn't help wondering if he was just messing with me. I'd worn one of his famous TFS stickers to the funeral and asked his brother, Mike, if I could put it on his casket. As I did so, I smiled and knew for sure this was all part of his evil plan. Goodbye, old friend, rest in peace.
