A
fter his commanding win at
Daytona in March and then
a dominating qualifying performance at Road America, there
wasn't expected to be too much
competition for wonder kid Cameron Beaubier. Then after Beaubier
broke away from the field again in
Saturday's race on his Yamaha Extended Services/Monster Energy/
Graves Yamaha, he had people talking about a potential perfect season
in the Daytona SportBike class. But
as so often happens in racing, you
can always expect the unexpected
and that's just what happened in
Sunday's final.
Beaubier had a major moment, flying out of the saddle of his Yamaha
R6 and smashing the windscreen in
the process, then nearly tagging the
back end of rival Jake Gagne's bike
under heavy braking and running off
the track. In the end those mistakes
were costly to the series leader
and for the first time this season he
tasted defeat. Taking full advantage
on Sunday was Red Bull RoadRace
Factory Yamaha rider Gagne, who
broke through to score his secondcareer victory in the class.
Beaubier absolutely dominated in
qualifying, the only rider in Daytona
SportBike able to dip into the 2:19s.
Yet even after that performance and
the fact he did it in Daytona at the
series opener, Beaubier wasn't sure
How close is this?
