VOL. 50 ISSUE 22 JUNE 4, 2013 so he made a little mistake there, which gave me an opportunity. Martin reminded me a lot of racing Blake [Young) in some ways. He goes so deep on the brakes in areas I just can't get in there that deep and he can still get it stopped. I was able to flow through and out of corners a little bit better, which worked in my favor a little bit. I threw everything I had at him. I was just going to keep lobbing them in there, making passes when I could until I could make one stick, just always looking for opportunity. "When I was finally able to get by I was able to string together a couple of good laps. I was trying really, really hard and got really tight. I was definitely struggling even from the halfway flag on. It was just me trying really hard and hanging perfect. I still moved up, in spite of getting knocked off the track in that big crash on the opening lap. So that was kind of positive. Morning warm-up was a wash so I told my guys we needed to go big [on changes to the setup] and we did. For the race we made changes to the front and rear suspension and made a big change to the wheelbase and that turned out to be really positive. I went over a second faster than I qualified lap after lap. The only mistake was we shortened the gearing and I was on the rev limiter on all the straightaways. I probably could have dive-bombed those guys [West and Farrell] in five on the last lap, but they were a tiny bit too far ahead. I worked hard to get back up to them, but just ran out of a little bit of top speed to hang at the end because we stuck sitting on the rev limiter." 25 DAVID ANTHONY 8TH/7TH Motosport.com Suzuki's David Anthony edged KTM factory rider Chris Fillmore in both races and his rides put him solidly inside the top 10 in the standings. "We definitely progressed a bit more than normal," Anthony said. "I've kind of been known as a 10th-place rider, so to kind of step up a little bit and get up there with a whole new team in terms of crew that's where we are trying to move forward. I had some good P43 on and gripping bars real tight. My right arm is pretty worked. I was squeezing the brakes really hard late in the corners and it was pretty hard to maintain." And Cardenas was closing in. "I was starting to panic a little bit when he started closing that gap up," Hayes said. "I was just trying to relax on that last lap. I never really looked back. I had a pretty bad moment in eight and thought I'd thrown away the race. I tried to come up with a game plan because I thought he was right on me. I looked back and realized I had a little bit of room and just tried to ride the second half of the lap clean." Cardenas seemed happy with being able to match Hayes' pace. "The race was good," said Cardenas, who struggled, especially in turn five, the last time he battles after bad starts in both my races. I ended up back in 12th or 13th and had to work my way up. I ended up battling with [Chris] Fillmore in both races, same as last year I think. It was good. It was never boring out there. I had someone to chase instead of running around by myself. He's got the torque and I've got the horsepower so it was just a matter of catching him. I knew once I caught him I could motor straight past." 72 LARRY PEGRAM 4TH/6TH Larry Pegram leaves Road America third in the standings, but he was not thrilled with his performance in Wisconsin. He said the team had more questions than answers this weekend and have a lot of work ahead of them trying to sort out those issues. "We tried something today and it didn't work," Pegram said of Sunday's race setup. "It was way worse. We did something because of the temperature [Sunday being considerably cooler] and I think it was wrong. We were definitely slower. I was kind of disgusted with the way I rode this weekend. I'll try to go to Barber and do way better. Yesterday me and Roger [Hayden] had a good battle the whole race, but today I was just in everybody's way. We just had no grip in the rear. I know everybody's complaining about that, but mine seemed considerably worse."
