VOLUME 58 ISSUE 8 FEBRUARY 23, 2021 P33 transmission into action. The 13:1 compression ratio engine is claimed to pump out 94 lb-ft of peak torque. More impressive than a new engine from H-D, perhaps, is the rich inclusion of high-performance technology from the bar-and-shield brand. High-end braking compo- nents from Brembo and suspension from Showa are fit on the machine, for example, and a new 6.8-inch touchscreen display should put the tech at your fingertips. Harley-Da- vidson also integrates adventure- touring-worthy selectable ride modes across the board. The base model Pan America 1250 features five modes (four are pre-programmed and one is customizable) including Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road and Off-Road Plus. Each ride mode blends "Cornering Enhanced" ABS and traction control settings with power delivery and en- gine braking levels for an opti- mized ride. The Pan America 1250 Special receives two additional modes that can be customized by the user, ex- actly how is yet to be seen. The premium Special ver- sion features the most bells and whistles—semi-active front and rear suspension with Vehicle Load Control topping that chart. The Showa com- ponentry with H-D-developed software senses rider/load weight and sets optimal sus- pension sag via rear preload. You can also upgrade your Special with Adaptive Ride Height that actually lowers seat height on the motorcycle when you stop and resumes normal ride height in motion. More to come on this. Standard Special features include tire pressure moni- toring, center stand, multi- position rear brake pedal, brush guards and skid plates, Daymaker adaptive headlam- ps (that illuminate corners), heated grips, wind deflectors and a steering damper. The bikes are said to be available in May in U.S. dealerships. The 1250 starts at $17,319 MSRP, the 1250 Special $19,999 MSRP. CN The Pan America 1250 adventures will be powered by Harley's new 60-degree, DOHC powerplant that features many advanced technologies, including offset connecting rod journals, forged aluminum pistons and four-valve cylinder heads plus a lot more.
