LOOKING BACK
Forty years ago, we heard about Project Nova, code name for Harley-
Davidson's new V-2, V-4 and V-6 engine platforms. We did a little
investigating... We also tested the all-new Honda CR125R that featured for
the first time water-cooling and a single-shock (Pro-Link) rear suspension
system... Dick Burleson won the Coyote Derby Enduro, which was the
opening round of the AMA National Enduro Series, at Red Mountain,
California... We had an interview with Bob Hannah who was making
progress on the track after breaking his leg in a water-skiing accident.

A photo of Rickman-mounted Bruce Baron from Carlsbad Raceway was
featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago... We reported that
Harley-Davidson-mounted Evel Knievel set a new record jumping 19 cars—
all Dodge Colts—covering a total distance of 43 yards. It was recorded
for the George Hamilton movie of Knievel's life, Color Me Money... We
had one rider's first-hand account on what it was like to ride the Boonie
Bounders' Gambler Enduro near Las Vegas. Hundreds started but only
approximately 30 riders completed the course... Larry Pfutzenreuter won
the Desert M.C. Hare & Hound at Lucerne.
