than a one-race cushion - and
that's after DNFing round one!
However, just as noteworthy
at Cherry Creek was the performance of Caselli's teammate,
Ivan Ramirez, who led most of
the race at the Little Sahara Recreation Area (the same general
area as round six two weeks ago,
just a few miles west). Unlike
round six when he took a wrong
turn while leading or even round
five when he headed out on
loop three instead of loop two,
Ramirez followed the course precisely and claimed his second
career National podium with a
solid runner-up finish.
Purvines Racing Beta's Nick
Burson rode to a convincing third
place even after getting sick on
the 42-mile third and final loop.
That chipped three points away
from the margin that fourth-place
finisher Argubright had on him
in the battle for second place in
points, the score now 140-135.
A comparatively short, sage
brush-covered bomb run parallel to the main pit funneled the
field between two FMF banners
and onto the mostly fast, dusty
40-mile first loop. Ramirez appeared to have the best line as
he blasted through the opening,
but Western Design Racing TM's
Tuffy Pearson suddenly flew by
on the right and into the lead,
seemingly a gear higher than everyone.
Though a bit cliche, Open A
points leader Pearson rode like
Ivan Ramirez
holds a slight
lead over Nick
Tolman and Kurt
Caselli.
