LOOKING BACK
Our cover story 40 years ago was how on to build a race-ready dirt tracker
from a kit. Pictured on the cover was a Knight-framed 250cc Kawasaki
flat tracker... We covered the SCORE Baja 1000. Larry Roeseler and
Jack Johnson teamed up to win it for the third straight year... Cycle News
interviewed 21-year-old flat tracker Ricky Graham who had just completed
his rookie season in the Winston Pro Series... Bob Balentine won the Dirt
Diggers Grand Prix in Adelanto, California.

Bengt Aberg was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago
from the Inter-Am Motocross in Phoenix, Arizona. Aberg edged out Ake
Jonsson for the win... In California, 5000 spectators went to Saddleback
Park to watch 250cc World Motocross Champion Joel Robert do his
thing, and that was to whip the Americans, at the Trans-AMA Motocross
round.... We tested the right-side-shifter AJS Y40 (250cc) and Y50
(370cc) Stormer motocrossers... We showed our readers how exhaust
expansion chambers are made.
