LOOKING BACK
Yamaha introduced its 1981 lineup of motorcycles in Las Vegas 40 years
ago. We were most impressed with the company's 750cc V-twin shaft-
drive Virago, which was pictured on the cover... We covered the Syracuse
Mile. Gary Scott took the win, which was his first National victory since
1978... Bernie Schreiber won the World Championship Trials round in
Finland... Lane Leavitt topped the AMA/NATC National Championship
trials in Ohio.

Gene Romero was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago for
clinching the AMA Grand National Championship at the Sacramento Mile.
He did it in grand style that day by being the fastest qualifier, winning his
heat race and winning the main even from wire to wire. Two races were
still left on the GNC calendar... Ivan Mauger captured his third Speedway
World Championship in Poland... We showed you the soon-to-be-released
and what we called "freak" Honda US-90 three-wheel ATC.
