abor Day Weekend at the Illinois
State Fairgrounds has become
a dirt track tradition as amateur
and professional racers flock to the
famous facilities for AFT Short Track
and Mile events.
Following two nights of bar-banging
action on the tight arena short track,
the weekend wrapped up Saturday
and Sunday on the big smooth mile
oval. Always a crowd favorite, both
Mile races were sold out, unfortu-
nately, however, it was at the state
mandated 20-percent capacity.
In the American Flat Track SuperT-
wins class, Jared Mees continued his
strong season with first- and second-
place finishes on his Indian Motor-
cycle/Progressive Insurance-backed
Indian FTR750 even though the race-
track was totally different each day.
The fast line on Saturday was on the
rail, while Sunday found riders scat-
tered all the way to the air fence.
Sammy Halbert (69)
managed to hold
off Jared Mees (9)
to win the first night
of AFT SuperTwins
racing at the
Springfield Mile on
Saturday.
