Competitio n Park Morello Tops Competition Park By FRED W INDOM SA N JACINTO, CA , NOV. 11 New York transplant Marco Morello took home the lion's share of the pu rse at th e Southern Cali fo rn ia Fla t Tra ck Association 's season fi nale. Co m petition Park 's mile ov al held up well and gave th e fans some exciting raci ng on a cold , sto rmy Saturday n ight. Rai n th reatened to bring an ea rly hal t to the raci ng, and wh en a break in the clo uds came , th e deci sio n wa s ma de to run the 25lap Open Pro feature fir st in the prog ram. Steve Fort un e, T om Ho rton and Jeff .John son led th e fie ld into th e fi rst tum. John son passed Hort on and Fortune on the back chu te, only to sta ll the motor in tum three. He m anage d to refire the eng ine but came out of tu m four at the ba ck of the pa ck. Keith Bradford pull ed i nto third , w ith Mo re llo c o m i ng up through th e pa ck. Hort on and Fortune were o ut fro nt . ru nning th eir own rac e, as Mo rello and Travis Pett on began to ru b on Bradford for third . Morello sli pped up the inside of Bradford in two, but he still had to battle to hold the spot. Comin g into tum one on the next la p , Petton low -sid ed after bumping into th e back of Bradford a n d wa s h it b y another rider, brin gin g out th e red flag . Pett on was out for th e ni ght. Fortune , Horton, Brad fo rd , Morell o and Byron Kukl a le d the sinq le-fil e resta rt , b ut Joh nso n wa s ba c k on th e g as an d passed through to th ird by tu m four. Horton wa s on Fortune's tail in tum two . Johnson ran around th e o utsid e to pull along side on th e ba c k stra ig ht. taking second awa y from Horton in tum four and drivi ng up the inside of Fo rt une to t ake th e lead in tur n on e. Mo rell o soon joined Fortune and Horton to m ak e it a threeway rac e for second . Mor ell o tr ied to pass on th e inside of Ho rton in turn two, bu t Ho rt o n pin ch ed off th e li ne and M orello he ld o n to fourth. Hort on too k the insid e in tum one, trying to m ak e the pass on Fortune, but it backfired and almost put him o n the ground as he slid out into the m arbl es, leaving Mor ell o thi rd . Morell o ran up th e in side co m ing ou t of four, but F ortun e h eld on t o lead int o turn one , wh ere Morell o m ad e the inside pa ss stick to tak e seco nd. Hort on follo wed Mor ell o , passin g Fo rt une for th ird in the same spo t on the next lap . Jo hnson was runn ing out fro nt on cruise contro l, with Morello gaini ng littl e by little each lap. Horton and Fortune settled into th ird and fourth, wh ile Kukla pulled up on Bradford to challenge for fift h.
