The first loo p began with a trip up Potato Hill to a fire roa d , where the fi rst nine or 10 m iles of "free territory " were scheduled . Th e weather was clear and warm in th e sun, but the shaded roads and tra ils at the h igher ele vations still held seve ral areas of sno w and ic e from a stonn 10 d ays earli er. Many of the less-experienced rid ers had trou· ble on the sli c k road , and some top A -class riders had fun helpi ng Nov ices and kids leam how to nav ig ate th e sli ppery road. A few miles later at c heck t wo , a sho rt , wood sy single-tr ack tra il featured the fir st specia l tes t. Several riders were able to stay on time and record zeroe s, plus only ti e-brea k er seconds , at check th ree. The second loop began after th e gas sto p.
