Racing in the premier cl ass, the co mbined Pro/I nter m ediate contest, Kell o n Walch co llecte d the lio n's share of the glory , lead ing all the fa st guys through the ta pe s a t the en d of the long , g rueli ng race. The 125cc , 250cc and Four-Stroke Pros li ned up at the gate, interspe r sed b y so m e 125c c Int ermed iate s , who a c q uilled th e m selves well . Th irt een -year -ol d wunde rkid Ky le Partri dg e c am e ve ry cl o se to winning the whole thing, and John Stafford fin is hed an impressive fourth overall. As the 4 5- m inut e-p lu s-on e-lap one-mote- ta ke s -it-a ll event g ot und er wa y, Wa lch led David Fry, Ryan Terlecki , Mark Freh ne r, Mall Gosnell a nd the rest of the fie ld around the custo miz ed 5 -rnile·plus course, which co nsisted of some road -ra cing aspha lt secti o ns as well as dirt flat -tra ck areas and th e traditional motoc ro ss course. Partr idge started o ut of the top five but work ed his way to the front, finally pa ssing for the lead o n la p th ree . As the race progre s sed , Partridge co ntinually fe nd e d off pressure fro m Walch, who wou ldn't go away . Th ings rema ined clo se until the fina l lap , wh en Partridge made the ac q ua inta nce of a hay bale and was knocked back to secon d .
