MX West/Nevada S Championship Series tate Round 6: Fernley International Raceway A Winning Pair for Smith By J O HN S ILVA FERNLEY, NV, OCT. 22 o n d a -m o unt ed Ken Smi th fr om Ga rdnerville, Nevada , pocketed a pair of Junior-class w ins at round six of the Nevada State Champ ionship Series with an im p ressi ve four-mote sweep . Smith was unstoppabl e on the wide , sandy tr ac k, and he ate up th e new whoop section lik e i t was a Lion 's Club c heese b urg er. Sm ith ' s Over 25 Junior and Over 3 0 Juni o r w ins came aft er he went up ag ainst a tough field , as the gate was fill ed with com pet ito rs from all over Nevada, as we ll as Ca lifornia and Idaho , as m ore than 300 rid ers turned out to race for con t ingenci es , trophi es a n d ser ies po ints. Th e Over 2 5 Junio r race r s we re the first rid ers o n th e track , and as su ch they we re in an env ia ble posi tion , as Fernl ey ' s " o ld schoo l " sand t rac k usually gets m ighty rough as the bikes work the bumps . Californian Dave Pile got a g o od jump off the gate and seemed to be headed for the RMS holesho t award, but he was out maneu vered around th e first turn by f e l lo w C R5 0 0 r i d e r Sm ith , w ho c rossed the official hol eshot m arker H inches ahead of Pile. Sm ith, Pile and Chuck Evans diced for position in th e e a r l y lap s , bu t e v e n t u a ll y Sm ith pulled aw a y and h and il y w on t h e moto. Smith was again un st oppab le in the second rnoto, w ith Evans and Sm ith right in there as well . A new r ider j o in e d the f ray t h is t im e , a s Carlos Isom h it hi s st r ide and w as soon raci ng in sec ond plac e, behind Smith. In th e end , it was a tw o -moto sweep for Sm ith; Evan s ea rne d second ov e ra ll via a 2 - 3 m o t o sco re . Pile pa rlay ed a 3- 4 record int o th ird pl ac e overa ll , w ith lsom (6-2) fo urth and J os h D ied e ( 4 - 5 ) earn ing f ifth ov erall. Smith came roar in g off the line in th e Over 30 Junior cl ass and raced on to w in both m ot os in th is class as well. Sm ith wa s vict o rio us ea ch time o ut o ve r D av id Du nh am an d Pil e; Harry Trainor (6- 6) and Rob Kowal sk i (9- 5) rounded out th e top fiv e fi nis hers . The Ov er 40 Exp ert class was a real be rm- buster , w ith Fe rn ley regu lars Mike McMurry , Larry Brown and Gi lbe rt Chick all rac ing whee l to wheel. In th e f ir st moto , Brown g ot d o w n and led the ea rl y go ing , but McMurry was in a hu rr y and eventua lly made a critical pass stic k aft er sev- era l laps of bar-bang ing . Mea nw hile , Ch ic k held fi rm in third place, but he was affo rde d no o pportunity to hatch a p l an , so w he n the ch ec k er ed fl ag flew , it w a s M cMurry , Br own a nd Chi ck in th e top three positions. When th e second m ot o got under way . Brown bl ew the m aw ay off the line and raced out front for the dura tion. Chick was on fire in th is heat, and h e h eld off the re pea ted c h al l en g e s o f McM urry unt il th e . e n d. B r o w n ' s 2 -1 tota l netted him the overall win , w it h McMurry 's 1-3 sco re snagging sec o nd . The r i d e r s kept a good d istance from other bik es because dust m a d e it har d to see and hard to pass un less someone went do wn. It w as understood th at t he p er son w ho got th e hol eshot would defin it ely be the win ner . P.A . A llen gra bbed th e hol eshot and won with a m inute and 3 0 sec onds to spare . I had to eat his dust until he got o ff the tra il , just lik e others had to eat m ine ."
