BRIEFLY• • • Missing fro m the racing actio n at Des M oines opener was Bill' s Pipes/S uzuki' s newest recruit, Charley Bogard. Apparently. Bogard bruised his kidney wh ile practicing for the upcorninq serles several weeks ago in Cal ifornia . The Texan is expected back in three to four weeks . New fo r A renacro ss was the over-under bridge that is use d at several Su percross races each year . The tight confines of the small arena made for some interesting track prep and the layout of the track was completely new to the series . The track featured five left-handed turns and no right turns. but most of the riders seemed to like the track. and it has been said that the bridge will be used again later in the serie s. A number of new teams arrived in Des M oines on Friday and the biggest change was that of Team Thor/H ondalTuf Racing. New membe rs Rusty Holland. Wisconsin's Chad Jo hnson and 15·year·old Shane Lusk jo ined last year's team leader Jeff W;)Ioh to make for one impressive team line-up. Holland and Johnson each qualified for two mains. while Lusk had a lillie to ugher time.• Lusk rode well. but ts just not physically ready for the big bikes indoors.' team manager Chris Hunter said after the ev ent. " He's not go ing to do any mo re Are nacro ss this year. W e wan t him to do more amateur racing and the n we 'll give him a shot again next yea r for sure . " Carr ollton Kawasaki also revamped with Texan Josh Demuth and Canadian Darcy Lange heading up their efforts. Demuth started the series out with a bang as he walked away with the first Are· nacros s main even t w in of the year on Friday in the 125cc class. w hile Lange wa s impressive all weekend as well. The G .P. Motorsports /SoCa l /Pro C ircu it /Yamaha team made its Arenacross debut. The team consists of Iowa' s Chad Pederson. Ohio's Greg Rand and Ultracross Champion Brandon Bartz . W ;th the large turnout of riders. only Pederson qualified for the mains. Pedro Gonzales and Denny Stephenson make up the St. Louis Powersports /Kawasaki team and they arrived in a new team hauler that was the center of attent ion all weeke nd. The Pro Source Yamaha/ Thorteam of Tommy Hofmaster and .Junior Jackson arrived in a 48·foot transporter. but only Hofrnaster w as ridi ng . Hofmaster qualified for three mains but inju red his ankle and knee dur ing a scary J ump -Off crash on Satu rday . J ack so n is out of act ion until J anuary with bro ken ribs and a punc· tured lung that he sustained before the series ope ner. cue I e n eVIl's N OV EMB ER 22 ,2000 15
