As the first m ot a o f th e 250cc Nov ice class
too k o ff tow ar d the first tum , Dudl ey escaped
from th e first-turn crush wi th t he lead . followed closely by Steve Grieb and Cla rk Watson . Dudle y pull ed away from th e pack on the
tight. superc ross -sty le CMXR track. which is
located behind th e main track at Competition
Par k. Gr ieb and W ats on were in a battl e all
their own. but Ben Cates and Joe Melton wer e
on th e m ov e forward after losin g a co uple o f
po sitions on th e first two la ps . The first ri de r to
be p assed by Ca tes was Ti m Lyons . Me lton
wa s r ig h t b ehin d Ca te s, but h e was st uck
be hi nd Lyon s for ano the r la p. Next ca me Wat so n , who had los t the pac e of th e front- runners at th e ha lfwa y point o f the I O-Iap race.

lap. The pac e of the two Yama h a riders was
furious. however. and Cates was soon stuc k
be hi nd Watson: ev ery passi ng atte m p t h e
made was in vain . Melton was still going afte r
th e lead er. Du dle y. With two laps to go . the
ru nni ng orde r gol a big jail: Gr ie b. w ho was
run ni ng a consiste nt second, m ad e a m aj or
m ist ak e th at allo wed Mel ton. Lyons and Cates
th e opportunity to move up another spot.
In all the exci tement. Ca tes sw ooped by
Watson for third pla ce . Watson wasn 't done.
th ou gh : Grieb rejoined the race and was
hounding Wa tso n for the fourt h position
throughout the white-flag lap. With a couple of
corners to go. Watson left the door open and
Grieb slid into fourth . At the fi nis h, it was Dud ley way out fro n t; t hen ca me M e lt o n and
Cates. and then . another cou ple o f seconds
back. Grieb and Watso n .
At the sta rt of the seco nd mota . Ron Hen derson. who was in a first -lap incident in the
first rnoto, took the lead ahead o f Dudley and
Cates. Behind the three fro nt- runners was a
jostle of riders led by Lyons. Hen derson pulled
away. and Dudley gapped Cates as well . The
real battle was for fou rth . and w hen the pack
came around at the end of the second lap.
Grieb had o verta k en Lyons. Run ning sixth was
Melton. who loo k ed reason abl y slower than in
his amazing first -m o ta pe rfo rm a nce . As the
race wo re on. it was clear th at Hend er son had
th e m alo won . Dudley was a clea r-cut second.
and th e overall v ic to r on the day . Ca tes fin ished th ird for second overa ll ,
