" Off t he li n e , I didn 't get a very good start ," said K re iss, " b ut I had m a p p ed out a good line through those two step-ups , rig ht through the creek - those little cliff j um ps. I pretty much pa ssed everybody right there , because I held it w ide open over the fir st one. Wh en th e fir e roa d ended , Zimmer m an m ad e the fi nal pas s and was th e fi rst one into the extre mely dusty two track sec tion of the course. Wi th jus t four races left in t h e serie s, everyone hoping to do well in the championship wa s in attendance. The 20 -mil e course that was fast and o pen with a few stee p downh ills, but the biggest challe nge for ri der s wa s the dus t. The lon g , dry summer le ft the race course slick and silty . More than 8 0 riders lin ed up f o r th e start of t h e r a c e i n a ro ck y riverbed . Riders raced u p two quick j um ps before leaving t he riv erbed and heading up a long , fast fire roa d. T h e r a c e for th e h ol e shot wa s probably th e m ost important and best ra c e of th e d a y . Aaron Yo use moved h is Yamaha int o th ird at the sta rt and re mained there for m ost of th e rac e. Col e Mar shal also had a decent st art but got cau gh t in the dust. For most of th e race , th e top four rid ers rem a in ed in the sam e p o si tions , un ab le to move forward in th e dust , un t il nea r th e end of the fina l lap , wh en Marsh all pulled up beh in d You se. Zimm erm an 's fas t p ac e not on ly earned him a victory but also !3 n extra lap , as he fin ish ed his third lap j ust under the cut-off t ime and was t he only racer to go ou t for a fo urth lap. On th e second lap, Kreiss ran into some ma jor bike probl ems that forced him to ride without a rear br ake for the fi nal lap of the race. On the fast and slick course, Kreiss was forced to just try an d survive. Marshall was the next to fin ish, just behind Kreiss. Ma rsh all was satisfied with his finish and felt the club did a good j o b with the course. Youse fi nis hed fo urth, his best fi n ish of the yea r so fa r. With three rac es left in the series, the race for the ch ampionship is still a cl o se on e. W esner is un officially abou t 10 p o int s ahead of Marsh a ll , with Zim merma n and K re iss not far behi nd .
