Instead of be ing co ncemed about how many modificat ion s ca n be made to their factory -new bikes , th ey a re involved with tuning and rid ing m o torc ycl es that wer e n ew in the 1970s . There are few so urces a va ilabl e for anything other than pa rts for th ese bike s - a nd even thos e can be ha rd to find at tim es. This scarcity of a fte rmarket tuning or fa ctory support re d uces th e a dvant age that m o n e y can have on mach in e performa nce . Competing with in th e rule limitations of a Vintage class prevents trick mod ifications . Just ke ep ing a 30·year-old motocrosser running and in race order can be a big challenge. This tends to level the playing field considerably. It also in c re a s e s th e c a m ar a d e r ie . Though the co m pe t itio n is real and uncompromising on the tra ck, in the pits, assistance is read ily pr ovid ed to the com petition . Vinc ent grabbed th e holeshot in both motos a nd nev e r relinqu ished th e lead . Th at doesn't m ean he wa sn 't ch a llenged. Both John Wern sdorfer Jr. a nd Sc ott Daros kept th e pr ess ure on th rou gh both races. Da ros ga ined ground on the lea der through the clo sin g lap s in the firs t moto. He was cl ose e nou gh for Vinc ent to feel the he at, espec ia lly in the back sections of thi s Nationa l t ra c k. On th e last la p, Wernsdorfer began to put pressure on Daros , and Da ros' concentrat ion natu rally s hifte d to holding on to sec ond. W it h 100 y a rd s t o g o , Dar o s got c ross- rutted in th e last c o rner. The fron t whee l tu cked under a nd Daro s e nded up on th e gr ound in fro nt of his bike . Fortu nately, he was o nly shaken up , but his Ca n-Am was no t ready to start t he second moto , moving Brian Vanella into third place overa ll. In the second moto, Wernsdorfer too k up the job of keeping Vincent hon est. Wernsdorfer 's ligh tweigh t Rickman -Yamaha seemed to have an advantage in the tight sections, but the ho rsepower of Vinc ent's Can -Am ga ined back lost gr ound on the big uphill. Meg a S er ies. Kelly Smith re m a in e d th e Four-Stroke top gun , as he a ls o wen t 1- 1 for the ov erall to extend the po ints le ad in the s er ies. In th e first 125c c A moto , Riddle boun c ed around t urn one ahead of Ohi o's J eff Gibson , J im Nee5e, Josh K Summey and Donnie Adams . Riddle began to s tretc h out a gap over Gib son earl y on lap one . By lap two , Gibson had dial ed in the track (whic h fea tur ed mor e than 10 cosmetic c ha nges for this ra ce ) a nd was right on Ridd le's re ar fe nder. Robbie Horton, who had a po o r s ta rt, ba ttled Nic k Metcalf for fifth. Horton moved through th e pack in hopes of wor king his wa y up to tangle with Riddle . By th e fourth la p , Gibson filed by Riddle on a n outs ide line . Riddle was jolted a wa ke by the pass ; he qu ickly recovered and easily glid ed by Gibson to retake th e front spot. "I just d idn 't hit the rig ht line on th e qu ad and Gibs on go t by," Riddle said. "The n I just s et up for the ne xt t u rn a nd p assed h im. I just opene d m y throttle and took off." By th is p oint, th e r a c e for the c heckered was over , as Ridd le pulled away fro m Gibson , who rema ined in sec on d place, while Horton stea dily wo rked his way up to co ntes t Summe y for third. Summey a nd Horton gai ned on Gibson a nd a three -wa y battle for second deve lo ped . Horton a lmost lost control of h is m a ch ine wh en his fe et came off th e pegs . Ba c k under co ntrol , Horton moved by Summe y a nd th en jum ped by Gib s on th ro ug h the whoops to ta ke ov e r second. Riddle had too mu ch of a lea d for Horton to ma ke up the distance . On the final lap, Gibson went dow n, slid ing off the track afte r a s e ries of stutter bu m ps . Horton sealed up second . Summey took th ird , Metcalf was fourth , and Gibson placed a disa ppointing sixth. Su mmey too k t he s econd -moto ho le s h ot, followed b y Ridd le ( who was riding with a n injured thumb) , Gi bso n , Aaron Die t e r , Neese a n d Metc a lf. Riddl e c ha rged by Summe y to take the lea d on la p one , follo wed by Gibson . On the second lap, Su mmey los t it through the Supercross Six, re m o unting several s pots ba ck. Meanwhile, Gibson rod e on Riddle 's re a r fe nde r, while Diet er and Metcalf duked it ou t for s econd. On the final lap , Gibson tried every trick to get by Ridd le , unsuccessfully. Riddle he ld on to first, despite a poss ible transmiss ion probl em. Dieter remained in th ird, with Metca lf taking fourth. Neese ended up fifth. Horton was a no-show. Cla rk Stiles was the front-runner at th e sta rt of th e firs t 250 c c A m oto , chased by Ne e s e , Me t c a lf , Da vid Kratz , S u mmey a nd Bria n Ma s on . Riddle was in ninth , with Ho rton last off the ga te . By the second lap, Stiles had a comfortable lead ahead of Neese. Riddle began to push seventhplaced Gibson around th e obstacles, whi le Horton began p ick ing off riders . As Stiles m ainta ined the front spot , a batt le for second e vo lved between Neese , Metca lf, Summey, Smith and Ridd le, who had manag ed to get by Gibson .
