Fo r m any of th e c om peti to rs, it was a last-ditch effort to secu re the season cham p ionship. At th e sta rt o f th e first m o to o f th e co m - v bined Vet O ver 30 Int erm ediat e and Vet Ov er 30 Expert classes , Vitonix's Lance J ohnso n an d Glen n Cunni ngham b anged handle b ars fo r th e adva ntage into th e seco nd tum. J ohn so n was the only Expert rider on the track, and he got th e nod, but he wa s houn ded by Cunningh am . Th en ca me Vet Over 30 Intennediate points leader Ma rk Howell . right in fron t of. his m ain co mpetition rOF the number-on e plate, Vic Walker. As the race progressed . Cu nning ham was soo n at the fron t o f the pack , wi th Ho w ell o n his rea r fen der and Wa lke r r ight behind bo th ri ders. O n the fi fth lap of th e 10lap race, Howe ll made his m ove fo r the lead . Soo n Walker wa s knocking on the door, but he wa s unable to make a pas sing attempt. T he finish in g o r de r wa s How ell, Cunningham, Walk er, Woody Ca rlso n and Steve Scrape. . On th e lin e befor e th e second m oto , Howell had an aura of co nfide nce about him , knowing the ti tle was all bu t locked up . Wh en th e gate dr opped , Cunn ingham and J ohnson we re onetw o in a mirror ima ge of th e first m ot o. How ell was midpack , but he worked his way int o th ird befor e th e end of th e first lap and ha d Wa lk er right behind him. Walk er, looki n g for th e ups et, pu shed past Howell on the fo urth lap and so on had hooked on to the leader. Cunningham. As th e fifth lap co n ci ud ed, Wa lker wa s lead ing , foll owed b y How ell . John so n and th en Cunningham . Walker appeared to have the m oto won , but Howell was not goi ng to crui se to second. He put the power of his four-stroke Yamah a t o th e ground and rep assed Wa lker with only two laps rem ainin g . Wa lker had noth ing left for Howell , and both riders crossed the fin ish line afte r the ir 25 m inut e-long mote. As early as T hu rsda y ni ght, the Butte began to overflow as riders and their rigs pack ed in early, and b y Saturday m orning it wa s lit er all y t rials- bi ke pa rking roo m only . Th e sk y was clear and th e tem peratures abso lutel y perfec t as riders buzzed u p and down "T h e Grand Slab" and all o ver the sticky granit e surfa ces th at m ak e Luc erne so fam ous. A second stunt plane showed up and br ought the ent ire cro wd to it s kn ees as it per formed just about eve ry move imaginable and then ended the show with an upside-down flyby that was close enough for spec ta to rs to see the lettuce stu ck in the pi lot's teeth . Th e cou rse wa s lined with judges in fuJI uni form (ugly Hawaiian shirts and straw hats), the boundary rib bon kept th e spect ators back , th e stage was finally set , and co mpetitors were d irected to th e sta rti ng gate . Ea ch ride r was chec k ed by th e start-gate ju dge to en sure th at th ey were indeed in third gear. The y were then sent off th ro ugh th e first set of cones and up a sandwash. The n th ey had to navigate a nearl y c omplete ci rcl e and head back down toward the starting gate . The com petition was fie rce, as riders attempti ng t o make it up th e was h were fl ung off th e cou rse left and rig ht. Jason Perr y , B ru c e Davis a nd Jared Ma l mquis t placed high with sty le poin ts. Perry vee red off co urse , straig h t th ro ug h a 4 -foot -h igh pucker bush, and nearl y took out a handful of spec t ato rs .
