MOTOCROSS Saturday ' s Mot o cross e ve nt was h e ld back at T wo Riv er s , and th e Leahy famil y's tra ck was long , wide , challeng ing , just about dustl ess , vintage-friendl y a n d fun . De spite th e wilting heat, there seemed to be noth ing but smiles among th e more than 250 entrants. Col orad o racer G raham Barber was a post entry for the da y, but he took home first -place troph ies with a string of m ot o wins in all th ree of his c lass es . In Ov er 30 Expert , the Honda-mounted Barber was fo llowed a t a distan c e by Pen ton rid e r Da ve Lindeman in both m otos. Wh ile Bar ber , now on a Kaw a sak i, fo rg e d his wa y t o the fr ont in t he Sp o rtsman 500 c c E x p e rt co n test, Va n Hic e ed to ca ll it a day. The other eight races wou ld be run on Sunday; the Historic Cup round would be canceled and the remaining ra ces wou ld be s ho rte ned by two laps . The events of t h e day ove rs ha dowe d the fact that Will Hard ing and his 1936 India n had dou bled, in Pre -1940 and Class C Handshift. On e of Sun d a y ' s best ra ces was th e Formu la 500cc contest between the 1976 Ya m a has of Kyle Cors er a nd Robert Hur st. They ra n si de by s ide, with Cors er han ging on to th e n a rrowest o f le ads at the c heck e rs . Th e two we nt at it aga in in Form u la Vintage , th is time with Hurst tak ing the win and Bri an Filo putt ing his Yamaha 750 twin into second , a hea d of Cors er. In a n e xcellen t 35 0cc GP conte st, Du c a ti-mounted Craig Bre ckon bat tle d Ron Mel t on , o n a Bul t a c o 250. Afte r s itt ing in Brec kon' s ba c k pock et all race, Me lto n took ove r the lea d a t th e white flag a nd held it the la st tim e a ro und th e 1.7 -m ile , nine- turn tra ck . Unfo rtuna tely, Melton wa s docked a lap and mo v ed t o 10th pla c e for a p pa re ntly jumping the sta rt. Popp spotted t h e Formu la 750 competition about a quarter-m ile as he shredded first gear in th e M3 Ra cing Ho nda CR750 on the starting line a nd had to m ake do with se cond gear and above for th e re ma ind er of the ra c e . It to ok thre e laps fo r Popp to erase th e gap and rocket past a fine battle for t he le ad between Filo and Gle n n Campbe ll. Eventually , Ca mpbe ll pa ssed Filo to cla im s econd. Out front in moto o ne , Lindeman a nd his Penton 250 got a round Hice' s big -bore Ma ico to take th e lea d . ROAD RACING Th ings got off to a rou gh start in race one when Pre - 1940 ride rs Ar t F a rle y a n d AI Knapp co llide d a n d we nt down . Nei th er wa s hurt bad ly, but th e fi r s t oi l of th e d ay wa s dropped, c a us ing a 45 -minute de lay. It was disc over ed th at, des pit e assura nces o t herw ise, the tr a ck wa s e q u ip ped with just two broom s and no oil-d ry. Race two went off fine, bu t in th e third . th e com bine d 250cc GP/C la ss C ra ce, a m ac hine a ppe a red to ha ve circ ula te d the tra ck twice while leaking o il, ca us ing Doc Batsleer a nd Lonnie Ha rmo n to fa ll.
