North/South Showdown 2000 Hare Scrambles: In Tonopah, Nevada, Team Green Open rider Shane Esposito too k the overall victory for the Northern division for the s eco nd year in a row. Es posito, who is als o a well-res pected Pro motoc ros ser, is proving to many that it is possible to go fast In both styles of racing . first for the first 15 miles before making a co s tly bobble on a rocky c liff that a llowed Tichenor to qu ick ly shoot past the downed rider on his Reno Motor Sport/Fox Racing/Pro Circu itbacked , Tony Berlutti-prepped RM. Meanwhile, Matt Gosnell was picking riders off left and right on his DH1backed Yamaha YZ426F, in hot pursuit of the overall victory for the southem division. Also making up for a bad start was Husky USA/Thor/ VP/RMS/IMS backed Dennis Belingheri, who made a well -executed p a s s over Tichenor to take the lead in the 250cc class . Bel ingheri unfortunately fell victim to the Tonopah ro ck s , busting h is wat er pump. However, the d edicated rid er patched up his bike in the field and finis he d th e ra ce in o rd er to ke ep h is points lead ov er the rest of the field. Th e second and final s ecti on of th e course t ra veled th e lowe rs se ction of Ton opah, whic h co ns isted o f ma ny fast a n d twisty roa ds, rocky sand washes , an d a few w h o op e d - o u t bugg y- co urs e roads to le t the riders and the ir su s pen si on have o ne last workout before the finis h of the race. Esposito co nti nued to hold on to his lead a nd comfortably too k the overall victory for the Northem divis ion. "The Rooste r's M/C d id a n e xcelle nt job with th e ra c e," Esposito s aid . "Being the first ride r ov e r th e c ourse c a n be tough sometime s , [bu t] I nev er had a ny probl em s foll o wi n g th e c ourse." MRANN Series Round 5: North/South Showdown 2000 Hare Scrambles Esposito's Exposition of Excellence By dropped , the Experts fired their bikes simu ltaneously and sent up a blanket of dust. The on ly rider not affected by the dust was VP Racing/Axo-backed Open rider Esposito, who wheelied his bike over the crest of the first hill and nev er looked ba ck. Right on his heels was northem Open rider Greg Searle and s outhern Open rid ers Wad e Phillips and his brother Jacob Ph illips , followed by 250cc riders Jason Rob binson (from th e south ) arid St eph e n Tichen or (from the north ). Dusty conditions made pass ing a little d ifficult , a nd with the hefty roc ks s prinkled throughout Ton opah's valley , stra ying off the course could be risky . After the first 10 miles , the racers blazed qu ickly through the pits before heading off on the first challenging 35-mile loop . Th e first s e ction of th e ra c e hel d mo st of the technical section s, with its tw isty sand washes , roc ky m ounta in ridges and virg in tra ils . Robbins on he ld STEPHEN TI CHENOR TONOPAH, NV, SEPT. 10 or the second year in a row, racers from southern Nevada met in the middle of the Nevada desert to c ha llenge the North em division in search of an answer to the question , Who breeds the fastest racers in Nevada , the North or the South? Once aga in , with the help of Team Green r ider Shane Esposito, northem Nevada was victorious over the Nevada "Confede ra tes." Tonopah is kn own for its fa stpaced , rocky -style races that can put an end to a good day if a rider is not on his toes. In addition, with a ll of the c a r and truck races that run through t h is well -r espected race town , it is easy to have an entire ra ce o n whooped -out buggy-course roads - a possibility that was feared by m any' ra cers . Th e Roosters Mot or cycl e Club , how ever , prov ed ev ery on e wron g by c re ating a well-marked an d highly div erse course that went over ve ry well with m ost of the racers . Close to 200 racers lined up at th e start to do battl e. In the Novice di vision , northern 250cc rider J os h Ka uffman was also impressive , taking the overall Novice divis ion 16 positions over second place. The Mini riders are sometimes the unsung h e ro e s of racing . They are, however , the future of racing a nd should not be forgotten . One such racer that disp layed his future potential was northern 80cc rider Justin Soule. The multitalented motocross/ desert racer ha s been the dominator in his division the ent ire season , ta k ing the overall honors in just about every desert race he has entered . Other fast gu ys worth men tion ing include sou thern 60cc rider J us t in Wallis and southern Pee We e ride r Dylan Hansen . Both riders overailed thei r respective divisions, proving to everyone that their day as big-b ike heroes will be coming soon. eN Nort!I/South Showdown Hare Scrambles Tonopah, Nevada Results:September10, ZOOO OPEN EX: 1.
