As the 250cc Pros sh ot up the long straightaway and entered a sweeping left-hand tum, Mark Flesia sn a red the holeshot. In the following quick descent and very short right-hander, Carlson swung in low for the first charge up the stairsteps with a small lead, Flesia fell into se cond, while Wayne Balliett , Scott Burris and lo cal ride r Dusty Harris topped out the first five. J ne""s Ryan Mortensen was a t Harris' sid e as th ey rounded the furthe r northe ast corn er of Boot Hill. In a tight race for first, Ca rlson took th e high side as Flesi a tried t o s lip und er. He ad ing in to the flat s, Carlson t r ied to get aw ay . On th e s e cond lap, Flesia made a slight mistake that allowed Carlson to ease awa y. Going d own again int o the fla ts, Carlson had a two -second lead on Flesia and Balliett, who took jump after jump almost in unison . On the stairsteps, a relentless Mort ensen challenged Harr is, and he outgunned him as th ey neared th e top of Boot Hill. As riders fell into th e Hole after the first turn a nd began their run up the sta irs , Ha rvey c ha rg e d int o first, with Le vi J ensen, Flesia and Ike J ost clo se behind. At the top of the S -turn on Boot Hill, Jensen made an inside move on Harvey that gave him first for the moment. As the riders flew into the whoop section, it would have taken a camera to record who was in first , but at the turn before the finish-line table jump, Har v e y b obbl ed sl ightly , giving Jensen the lead. At th e pitboard area, Harvey pressed hard but lost control slightly , gi fting J ensen with some breathing room . As they started up the stairs , Harvey was again at J ensen's s ide , and on the big horse shoe turn on th e northwest side of Boot Hill, he made a pass - but it only lasted for a few seconds , as J e ns e n rega ined the lead on the Ski Jump . Into the s outhe nd doubles , Harv e y passed Jensen fo r first. As Jensen came out of the wh oops, he swung too high and lost tim e to Harvey , who now had a two -s e c ond le a d .
