As the race spli nte red int o many separate battles, all eyes moved back to th e front. wh ere Denn ison battled Sisson . On lap four , Sisson gai ned a few bike length s, bu t a costly mi stake in th e wh oops and th e camelback gave Dennison th e cha nc e he needed to ass ume th e lead . W it h Joh ns on pulli ng free of the others, Baer started m ov ing up, getting by Mu ll en on the fo urth lap and going o utsi de t o pass Doug la s o n th e sixth. With two laps to go , Mu llen had hi s woods bike back in a close third as Ba er, Mull en and Dougla s battled for second. Beer took it. Wh ile onl y two riders entered th e Over 40 race, th e fina l had every one on th eir feet. Local fa vorite Jeff Hedd on was also cli cking off good lap times, and th e fat lady was nowhere near read y to sing . Demuth too k co mmand of th e 12 5cc Pro co ntest and never loo ked bac k. He didn't dare! Both Heddon and Met c alf we re all over hi m, wa iting for a mi stak e. But th e mild-mannered Texan found th e fas t way aro und th e track and pi cked up th e $500 rese rv ed fo r the w inn er. Metc alf raced to seco nd . all th e tim e as close as D emu th ' s shadow.
