Furna ce took the Schoolboy overa ll over David Walls, wh o posted a stron g set of sec ond -p lace rides, and O il Cit y , Penn sylvan ia's David Bau er , who took third by jus t edging o ut Josh T err y in both m oto s . Po wha tan , Vir g inia's Jeb Gask ill made it a complete Yama ha sweep of th e top five as he p ut his YZ 125 into fifth both times out. Furnace also looked quite im pressive in the m ore competitive 125 cc B class . He cha rge d his way to a double -rnot o sweep over some pr etty hot ride rs. Richard Nicklesto n and loca l speedster Travis Powers did their best to keep Furn ace honest in both outi ngs , but they just co uldn't m atch Fu rnace's pace. Allan McMilli an and Tommy Spelts rou nded out the top five. Since loc al Pro J im Neese totally dominat· ed round two of the seri es at East Bend MX the previ ou s week, he decid ed to show up at Birc h Creek and do the same . Neese was in a class by himself in the 125 cc Pro and 250cc Pro classes as he wa ltz ed aw ay with four moto win s aboard his Triad Powerspo rts/ Protel/ProAc t ion /FMF·back ed YZs. A strong tu rnout of riders in both classes was left to fight it out for the rest of th e podium po siti on s. Chad "The F ig" Newton is always a tough cookie when he competes at Birc h Creek events, and this night was no different. Newton ma y not have been ab le to challenge Neese, but he sure had the rest of the field co vered . Maryland 's Chris Day wa s strong in the 125cc Pro cl ass, with stro ng starts and hard rides, but Newton found a way past in each m oto to secure second both times out for the runn er-up in 125cc Pro raci ng . Day ' s nigh t was not over: he was left to fend off East Coa ster Mike Martin, wh o was returni ng afte r an inj ury and is quickly getting bac k up to spe ed . M art in ca ught Day and sli pped by to roun d out the top three in both m otos. Day slammed th e door at fourth , holding Chris A nstead at bay . Newton was back again to nab a p air of second -pl ace ri de s in 250cc Pro raci ng for another podiu m, p adding h is series p o ints lea d . Husqvarn a support rid er Alan Alford grabbed thi rd in moto two aboard his Husky CR250 but missed the pod ium because of his seve nth- place first· m ote fin ish. Martin jumped in to fill out the 250cc Pro pod ium as well. and Chri s Fo wler traded fourth-pla ce fini shes, but Loc k was ahea d at th e end and grabbed fourth over all . John Sherry and Steve Hara had a surp risingly clos e battIe in the Vintage cl ass. with Hara getting the hol eshot on a TM250 Suzuki . Sher - ry , ridi ng a Hus k y, was getting some b ig a ir while look ing for a way around Hera, but the leap s were all for naught, as Hara kept sq uirting away th rough th e turns. A fte r seve ral laps of beck -and -forth dici ng , Sherry went for it in a big way by successfully atte m pting a high sp eed d o uble -j um p th at Hara only sin g led . After the pass. a surp rised Hara too k note and stayed close to Sherry to the chec kered flag . Hara wa s fir st off th e start ag ain in m oto two. but thi s time S he rry wa s qu ick to exp lo it hi s jumping skills, u sing th em to p as s th e Suzuki rider . Hara wasn't so easily overtak en th is ti me, how ev er, as he too was now j umping all th e ob st acl e s that h i s Hu sk y -m o u nt ed oppo nent was - althou gh the th ud of the bot- tomin g sus pe nsion on their vintage bikes had on lookers wonderin g how mu ch harder they we re going to push it. A s t hey went at it, it becam e appa rent tha t Sherry's Husky had a bit m ore suspension, m aking it poss ible for him to end ure the pu nishment a little better than Hara. As th e race entered th e final stretch , Sherry began to pull away from Here . Sherry ultimately won the b ig tr ophy with 1-1 m oto scor es , but th ese tw o m en won a bigge r pri ze - th e respect of everyon e wh o w itnessed their race. Results P(W : I. Perris Racewa y LaPaglia Capture s Perris B y K EI'tI'tY M ORRIS PERRIS, CA, AUG . 26 Micha el laPaglia dominated th e 80cc Supermini class with a 1- 1 tally to score the overall win at round eight of th e Tem ecul a Motorsports Hot Summer Night Series ZIt Perri s Raceway . laPaglia grabbed a handful of throttle and put his Suzuki in th e lead out of the first tum, followed by Blu e Torch /FMF.backed Justin Mulford and Nol een · ba ck ed Br ett Rothas. A battle for second qu ic kl y took shape as Mulford tried to k eep Rothas at arm 's distance. Meanwhile, laPag lia ke pt smoo th lin es and began to pull aw ay fr om the pac k . Rothas , perhaps feel ing a bi t of ur gen cy to get pa st Mulford due to LaPa glia' s lead . reached into his bag of tricks and sneaked right into second thro ug h a l eft·handed co rne r. Mu lford then tr ied to ge t th e po sit ion back in the c orne r before the wh oops, but to no avail. With some very fast lap ti me s, laPagli a had a comfortable lead over Roth as and the rest of the field . At the check ered flag, laPag li a took the first· moto win , with Rothas and Mulford foilowing . For the second moto, Rothas had to look for a better start to try to stay with laPaglia . The gate dropped and Rotha s grabbed th e holeshot, onl y to lose th e lead to laPaglia in th e next comer. Mul ford then tried to get past Rothas as well but was denied th e position . Keep in mind that laPaglia and Rotha s race in th e Interm ediate cla ss, whil e Mu lford still races in No vic e compet it ion. Mulford was do in g a gr eat job in third. Rotha s tri ed to kee p laPag lia wi thin strik· ing distance, but laPaglia ' s fast pace helped him keep a com forta ble di stan ce. M ulfo rd, now a lonel y third, put it on cruise control. When th e ch ecker s wav ed for th e second moto, laPaglia took the win for a sweep, with Roth as finishing second . Mulford cruised in with th ird . Re sults ~ (4· 6): J. Jakf: Gagne (KTM); 2.
