McArthur's Tyler Fife sped hom e in second. front . Stewart slowly pulled away for a sweep of the fie ld. Gom ez dogged Burson rig ht up un til the c heckers fell to go 3-2 for second overall , over the 4-2 of Burson. Chad Nelson was equally impressive in the first Vet Interme di ate moto; he went wire to wir e for the win. Mike Ucilra flll ished in second place but not wit ho ut a fig ht fr om Randy Wilkin s. Todd Smart crossed the line a close fourth, Iollowed by Danny Battaglia and Joe Casagrande. The first mo to quickly turned into a bam burner betw een St ew art a nd M att Gomez. Stewart pull ed off the holeshot, but with in half a lap he had Gomez all over his back fender. Gomez hounded Stewart for the first three laps before seeing a littl e dayli ght when Stewart got sideways co m ing out of a co me r and lost his momentum. Gomez's sho t at the lead lasted about two turns befo re Stewart stuffed his way undern eath the Kawasak i rider to regai n the top spot. Stewart fend ed of f th e relentless Gom ez to eventua lly tak e the win by a m ere bik e length. Jake John son edged one of his m entors , Georgie Price, for the 250c c A win; Price returned the favo r later in the 600cc A fin al , edging Jo hnson and Jim Hollister, who com pleted a class sweep by winning all the Ov er 3 0 finals i n th e rai n-sho r te n ed three -race series . Phil Lib harl took all three 750cc A finals . Bob Babcock mad e a rare race appe ara nce, clo sing o ut with a pair of w in s in the O ver 40 and 400cc cl asses. Johnson grabbed the 250 cc A sta rt from Price, Raun Wood and Todd Stith . On the second la p , Price t ri ed to nudge his Deptford Honda teammate out of the g roo ve enteri ng th e fir st tu rn , only to hit th e hol e th at had started to develo p in the tum, and he couldn't get his rhythm going. He held on to second, with Wood third . In the 60 0cc A final . Price was first out of the second tum on his Metro Racing/Deptford Honda-spon sored Rotax, in front of Jim Hollister, Jo hnson and Clarence Bull . The front four stay ed ve ry clo se, with Holl is te r tr ying to mak e the upper line work , but Johnson found a ho le w it h two lap s rem ainin g and sli pp ed und er Holli ster for seco nd. As usual, Holliste r ju mp ed into the Ov er 30 lead, over Bob Sweeten and Todd Stith. He kept building on his margin until the rac e was red-flagged two laps from the end. After using the o pening roun d as a " ru stremoval session ." finishin g second to Sweeten, Babcock won both of th is week's Over 40 fin al s ahead of Sweeten. Rick Price ran a very close th ird . br iefly taking seco nd with three lap s left, but Sweeten retook the spot off the fourth tum on the same lap. With Na tio n a l Ch amp i on J o hn L e wi s absent from this round aft er domin at in g the pr evious two , the 85 cc class wa s wide open . Aft er easily win ning the 55 cc (7-8) and 65c c finals, Tom Mudgett Jr. almost pulled off a hat trick. taking the lead off the second tum over Jeff McManus and Nic k Henderson. How ever. Mudg ett fell in the fourth tum on the opening lap , giving Henderson the lead, which he held to the end. Joe Dohm took the po int in the J25cc B contest, closely followed by Zach Calcutt and Ed Hyde. Calcutt stayed right on his rear tire until late in the race, when Doh m prov ed bet ter at getting past lappe rs and pulled out to a three-length margin. Ja son Isennock ended his Amateur days by again easily winning the 600cc B final , but, as usual in this series, Rick Price was rig ht on his ta il t hroughout the enti re 250cc B final , while Tim Savin, James Little and Charlie Parker battled over thi rd some distance back. Isennoc k had no trouble with the lappers and kept Price a few length s behind him . w a: z '" w -' ~ ~ . The hot condition s left the challenging Glen Helen course dusty and slic k, but longtim e local Pro Gordon Ward seeme d im m une to the taxin g co ndi tio ns as he powered his VOR to the overall victory in the Over 30 Expert class. Chri stian Ladely proved to be quick and smo oth with the cl utc h and led the field into the sweeping left-hander. Chad Blough gated second , wi th Kevin Montgomery, Eric Wo lfe and John Whitaker rou nding out the top five . Ladely's stint at the poin t was brief, as Montgomery passed both Blough and Ladely com ing down Animal Leap to take the lead. Mont gomery continued to lead as the pack headed toward the canyon. Ladely held second . and Whitaker moved up two positions into third; Blough was bumped to fourth . War d moved up severlll positions to co m plete the top five .
