Stephens also put his YZl25 up against th e bigger m achines in the Open Money class and finished third. More than 80 riders fro m the tri-state area came out for the ra ce. Darryl Heisl er ca me off the line ahea d of J am es Mo r· rison and Dav ey Dupre!. Morri son wen t fro m second to fourth in one turn. Dup rel held second until Brent Carroll bl ew past . Steph ens kept nipping at Dupre!' s heels until he fell on the last lap. Heisler too k the c hec ke rs fir st. over Carroll and Du pre!. Morriso n led the seco nd m oto over Heisler and Ca rroll. Heisler went und er Morrison in a sweeper and Ca rro ll fo llow ed with a pa ss on Morrison in the back section. Carroll clos ed in on Heisler. Stephens wa s on Mo rr ison' s back fender and look in g for a way around . Heisler co uld n't shak e Carroll and won the race by only two seco nds. Th is week. the track was mu ddy after some morning showers, but that didn't stop Wenz from do mi nating the 250cc Pro and Open Pro cla sses again. Wenz took ove r the lead before the f ir st la p was co mpleted . Wasson sli pped ahead of Beving , but Wasson 's bike only last ed a lap before m echanical gremlins ap peared and ended his race. Joh nson , Letcher and Lang land . The Open Pro m ain even t proved to be a bi t m ore of a challenge for Wenz, as everyo ne want ed to overth row the new king. Wenz and Wasson, now on his 60 0cc Honda. battled for the holeshot , with Wenz again co m ing out on top. Rob Jones and C.J . Beving battled for th ird p lace, with Jones securing the positi on before the end of the firs t la p. A mi scu e by Wasson o n lap tw o sent him back to fou rth place as Jones and Bevi ng both m ade it past, Jon es began houndin g Wenz befo re th e second lap came to a clos e, Wasso n slid under Bevin g in turn th ree on the thi rd lap to take over th ird pla ce. Wenz fe nded off Jones ' attempts at the lead and by t he halfway p o i n t h e'd h ad enough. Wenz pu lled out to a five -bike-length lead and never let J ones get closer.
