He at three of round four belonged to Curry , who passed early leader Sha fer on th e first lap and went on to win virtually uncontested. The fourth rou nd closed out w ith what was perhaps the most important heat of the night up to that poi nt. Hedden got the gate from lane three and held off Bast , who had th e m isfortun e of st arti ng on th e extreme outside in lane fo ur. Bast had to conte nd with Ferris in the fir st turns and lost any chance of catc h ing Hed d en . With h is t h ird stra ight win , Hedden m oved into a tie wi th Bast, at 11 poi nts apiece. Jan niro and Curry were both a point off the pace with 10 each . In th e final rou nd , Bast fou nd himself in a mu st -w in situation , st arting fr o m la ne three. Car rill o was in la ne two, and Curry was agai nst th e wall in lan e fou r. C ar r ill o co n ti n ue d his impressive run with the best start , but Bast got undernea th co m ing out of tum two and grabbed th e lead . Once Bast had th e lead , he was gone. By the end of la p three, Curry had managed to bully Carrillo j ust enough to claim second . In th e next heat, Hicks fin ished up h i s n ight w it h another good start and th e win, which pushed his total to 12 points; Fi sher was sec ond and th ird wen t to Ferris. "The Crate" (f or hi s milk -crate start ing tech niqu e) - th en turned around and put it to the Mini Seniors. Mike Roberts and Cody Scott filled the other two spots on the podi um , in that order. A lt hough "The Crate" was not yet eli gible to legall y rac e in the Schoolboy div ision , he still co uldn't resist the tem ptation to warn the teens of his imminent arrival in their ranks by finishing an exhib ition second, behind Shawn Hughes. Sunset Rambl ers: The Over 30 gang rounds the first turn in Galion, Ohio. Thomas' father, Chris Thom as, turn ed in a pair of seconds in the Over 40 class , fini shing right behind Carl Davis, who followed up his win with an impressive second- place fin ish behind Honda -m oun ted Todd "To ddzilla" Muntz in the Bomber class. At the start, Manchester was the last rid er away . but he went around po lesitte r Hick s on the first lap and almost did the same to Faria on lap two before the Wily veteran deftly shut the tum-tw o door and kept the 1992 Nati onal Champio n in the runner-up spot, Faria led the rest of th e wa y 10 the checke red flag . Hicks ran the entire race close on the pole but was edged at the finish line for second place by Manches ter. Hedd en, who continues to lead the Northern Californ ia seasonal po ints chase . was credited with fourth pla ce. Mell gren qui ck ly pu lled out to a significant lead. Jason Take moto, Jack O'Dell and Lanry Wei sberg fo llow ed at a distance . Th en i t seem ed lik e something lit ~ nam e unde r Bert Silos, who ran deep in th e pack afte r a bad start . Ripping through th e field . Silos qu ic kly caught the leaders and passed T akamoto on the third lap for second. Wh il e Silos slo wly reel ed in Mellgren, Wei sberg worked hi s way around O 'Dell and Takamoto by lap four, only to toss it away in tum eight a lap later. By the white -flag lap , Silo s' p ursui t of Mellgren was paying off. He pulled to within stri king distance of the leader . Ag gr essiv el y d ivi ng into turn s one and tw o , Silo s sto le M ell g ren ' s li ne and pushed int o the lead . Th e hard -charging Mell gren m ounted a relentl ess co unte rattack. Even runn ing off the tr ack and int o th e dirt exiting tu m eight didn 't slo w hi m dow n, and Mellgren was all over Sil os by tum nine, pressing hi m hard do wn the long back straight. Running side by side int o tum 10, Sil os held the inside lin e, forci ng Mell gren to the outsi de and winni ng the drag race to th e chec kers for a well -deserv ed victo ry .
