After Hine s burnt th e c he c k into th e ne xt section , he had a few points to ma ke up on Mador e a nd KTM's Pe te r Tanner , who each had perfect s co re s lea ving th e d a y's first gas sto p. T h e n e xt loo p wa s 20 m iles o f some pre tty muddy trail s tha t su rely would've been a hoot witho ut th e extra water. Hines managed to ma ke up his burn points a t h is first opportunity , dropping 5 :02 , fo llo we d by Madore (7 :3 0) and Han s Neff (8: 04) . Hine s and Mad or e c o nt in ue d to pu ll awa y from th e pa ck, dropping four minut es apiece in the se ct ion that followed. When the goi ng gets to ug h, Hines gets going . He pulled away fro m the field in t he next sectio n, los ing o nly 10 :05 , fo llowed by Mad or e (12:07 ), GNCC regular Dave Gun n ( 12:1 4 ), Cayer (12: 16) and Claxto n (12:2 2) . After nea rly 6 1/2 hou rs in the sadd le, Hines had gone throug h hell and ba c k the fastest. Cliff's Cycle/KTM sponsored Neil Dennett grabbed anoth er A High Point with his 56-point score. Paul Smith was one of only two B riders to finis h the event, and he ea rned B Hig h Point honors with his 100-point score . This was the first attempt by J ohn Martin and th e High Winders crew a t p utt ing o n a three -moto Amat e u r Nat ional, and almos t 600 e n t r ie s showed up for the event. Don aho scored a no the r seco nd- place finish - which meant he would head into Saturday's moto with the points lea d . O n Sa tu rda y, Don aho o nce a gai n a bs conded with the holeshot. Judnic k pa s s ed him fo r the lead o n lap o ne . Hibbert als o pa ssed Judnic k, but then pulle d off the tra c k for a DNF early in the mot o . J ones sh owed up on Saturda y, a nd he rode through th e field a nd into seco nd by mote's e nd . Broughton e ve nt ua lly pa ssed Donaho for th ird , but fourth wa s a ll Donaho nee ded for the ove ra ll, and that's where he finished. Ross Larson was fifth. Ano ther local ride r won the 25 0cc A class. Cor y Keeney, o n his Pro Actio n CR250 , bested the field of 27 e ntries. Ke en ey took th e m ot o - on e ho le s hot , in front of Jason Klubbe n and Brad Woolsey . Ke e ne y took the moto win without a serious c ha llenge by Woolsey , who rod e a lone in sec o nd pla ce to t he finis h , in front o f Broughton and Mike Koch . On Friday, Woolsey put his Hond a in front of Keeney and company, but Keeney swept by and pulled out a lead of a few seconds earl y in the race. Woolsey closed ground on Keeney toward the en d, but Keeney hel d him off for the win, he a ding into S at urda y's rou nd in the lea d. Broughton and Koch again followe d, with Brya n Pic ci rell i finish ing out the to p five. Saturda y's final held few s urprises. B.J . Joh nso n g ra bbed the hol e sh ot a nd the ea rly lead, in front of Wools ey, Broughton, Koch a nd Kee ney. but the order qu ick ly s hi fted a nd Ke en e y , Wools e y , Broug hton , Koch a nd Piccirelli finis hed in tha t order. In the Over 25 A class, Scott Steinle pulle d the ho leshot on Thursday, with Da n Lulo ff fo llowing . Steinle still led after the first lap, with Mike Roswell in se cond and Bill Med ek in third. Medek would ta ke th e le a d on la p two and lead until th e fift h lap , whe n C ra ig S chwarz to o k th e lea d. Ro sw e ll ra n second , with Medek th ird a nd Ste inle fourth , a nd that's how they finished . On Frida y , S ch warz grabbed the le ad. On th e seco n d lap , Schwarz we nt down and s lipped to third. allow ing Luloff to take ove r the lead, with S t einle in hot pursu it. Luloff went down on la p three, and Schwarz took the lead again . Schwarz took the moto win and hea ded into Satu rday 's fina l in the lead . Mede k battled with Ste inle late in the moto for seco nd ; Medek emerge d on top , with Ste inle th ird , in front of Phil Gauthier and Mike Lenarz. Steinle got Saturday 's hol e sh o t, but Ros we ll, who had had a ba d da y on Fri day, came back to t a ke t he lead on la p on e. Ro s we ll lo o k e d s trong and was by far the fas test in t h e now sup e r - d e e p sa nd wash . Roswell we nt on to win the moto by a large margi n. Schwarz rode sma rt in second to take the Over 25 A overall win . Ste inle took third in the moto for second ove rall , with Medek fourth in the moto and Da vid Law ry fifth.
