Great Britain and Belgium routinely dominate the press at the MX des Nations, no fewer than 33 countries were represented at this year's event , incl udi ng places li k e Croatia, Slovak ia, Japan, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Canada, the Ukr aine, Venezuela and Latv ia (below) . Som e of these countr ies' riders are on older-model bik es, and many have all they can do just to make it to the event. Though they often fail to qualify or run near the back of the pack , few people begrudge the presence of these countries, who are often being rooted on back hom e by enthusiasti c fans. "Racing in Slovenia is very pop ular," said Slavko Rus, that country 's team manager for many years. "It's lik e a national spo rt. Slove n ia i s k now n for [wi nter spo rts ), bu t in m oto r spo rts, mot ocr oss and speed way are among the most popular. Fo r these riders. it is a big honor to repr esent their coun try." Among the most impressive of the countries not in the lime· light was Japan, which finished i n sixt h ove ral l. Th e Czech Republic's Michal Kadlecek also rode strong, as did Avo Leak of Es to nia , w hose team had the coolest sponsor - Saku Beer.
