The true of the day was not. despite the many talking points, in the Superbike class, but in the Supersport race. After a race riddled with nwnerous crashes. the biggest gasps. groans and moments of disbelief were right at the end of the Supersport race. The local Alpha Tedmik pairing of Jorg Teuchert and Christian Kellner, who had ridden perfect races up to that point. ended up leading Stephane Chambon on the final circuit Kellner. the Iong·tenn leader, had been overhauled by Teuchert, making him the favorite for the crown because of Paolo Casoli's earlier aceident and the points lead he would enjoy going into the final Brands race. Know ing thi s. Kelln er attempted a bold overtaking maneuver up the ins ide of the penu ltimate cornero With Teuchert oblivious to his presence. he quite correctly started turning to the apex. Kellner, a fraction too late realized that he was in too deep, too fast. touched the brake - and lost the front. crash ing into Teuchert. -I thought I could re-pass Jorg up the inside. but he came over from the wide line,- Kellner said. "I was going a little faster and had to hit the brakes, then I lost the front and we both crash ed, It is really shit.Teuchert, naturally , wasn't impressed. "I made an absolutely perfect race and I am absolutely devastated about what happened," he said. The sense of disbelief was palpable, leaving Chambon ecstatic with joy at being given 25 points, and the series lead on the run up to the final round. The whole race. in fact, was something of a demolition derby. A huge crash in tum one of lap one, invo lving five riders, started when lain Macphe rson ran over the grass in the inside apex, and crashed. ski ttIing two riders directly and leaving another two to crash on the debris. Out went Charpentier. Verm eulen (with a broken foot as a souvenir) . Undholm and Cogan. The brilliant qualifying of the Pirelli backed Ducatis of Piergiorgio Bontemp i and Fabien Foret were right out front, although Bonle mp i's machine was blowing smoke in enough quantity to have the Alpha Technik team canvassing the stewards to have Bontempi black -fla qqed, due to the following riders indicating the leak to their pit crews. On lap five. Casoli and And rew Pitt tangled after Cascli missed his braking marker and ran into the back of the Kawasaki. "I touched Pitt and we both finished off the track and now my chances of winning this world title are seriously reduced: Cascli said. "But it's not all lost. Now it's not a case of controlling my rivals but chasing them: it won't be easy but 1"11 clearly be trying 100 % to the end," With Casoli's cham pionship challenge in tatters. the Alpha T echnik boys looked like one or other was about to inherit the earth. Track know ledge helped the Gennan riders to hit the lead and third place, respectively. on lap nine, with Teuchert going into second on lap I I. Jamie Whitham and Pere Riba were another two big· name crashers at the entrance to tum one, d with Whitham trying to pass, losing the front for the I" lh race in succession. and skittling the distraught Riba. At half distance. Teuchert and Kellner looked to be away and clear, but Chambon dug his heels in to stay with them and close right up to the slipstream of Teuchert for the last few laps. Tha t's how it stayed until the fateful last lap, but behind Karl Muggeridge and Fabien Foret were having a dance all their own as they battle for what was to become second and third, with Muggas just taking the runner-up spot. A great charge from a poor start left Xaus in fourth, leaving the tiring Mere · galli in fifth. with Bontempi 's engine making it to sixth. -I cannot believe my luck today,- Chambon said. A whopp ing 16 crashes meant that only 20 finished, in the most costly Supersport race anyone could remember. Not least for the now divided and heartbroken Alpha Technik team.
