I -m ile res e t got e ve ry body back on time for the sta rt of the second se ct ion, which continue d the theme of ve ry tight single -tr a ck tra il consisting of nasty pop la r trees and pine bogs. Nalley wa s qu ickest here , dropp ing only one po int. Luc a , Scharphorn, Willey and Keen dropped two . At the first ga s, Luca led Nally by one point, with everyone else two or more be hind . Luca a nd Na lley blazed to twos at check five, with Keen keeping pa ce with a thr ee . Here the tra il s plit, with the AA and A ride rs go ing into an incredi bly na sty, tight sect ion of virg in terrain that woul d ca use a hunted rabb it to seek more open te rrain to hide in. The B and C rider s at least ha d a trail to follow. Nalley was the fas t guy ag a in in this sect ion , ca rd ing a n e ight at check six. Luca and Keen were the on ly others to keep pa ce, dropp ing nine points. Luca and Nalley we re tied for the lead as everyone headed for the second gas an d a mu ch -nee de d break. Kee n was th ree points back with 22 . Scharpho m's 25 a nd Willey 's 26 rounded out the to p five at the halfway point. In the s ec ond h al f, th e t ra il got tougher, a nd included some c ut -down sections, more ugly a n d ultratight po p la rs , a nd body-slamm ing p ine bogs. When the trail did open up , it opened to s trength -sap ping , power robb ing d eep s a n d and p len t y of whoops . Th e restart at 92 miles sent t he remaining riders back into the woo ds toward ch eck e ight , and just when everyo ne thought it could no t possibly get any more m isera ble , the clouds opened up a nd it beg an to ra in, m aking every log a s lick, nasty o bstacle a nd , with poor visib ility, virtua lly invis ible. Scores ba llooned , but th e leaders re m ai ne d the sa me. Luca led thro ug h this sectio n by d ropping 11 points one better than S ch arp horn a nd two better t h a n Na lle y - a nd re took th e lead, which he wou ld never relinqu ish. At 130 miles , th e trail split again , with th e AA and A riders be a ring the bru nt of the a bu se he a d in g tow ard check 10 .
