(ToE) BRIEFLY• •• You gotta like Nicky Hayden's prospect s fo r the pres tigious grand slam. If he we re to pull it off . he wo uld surely cement his place among some of the greates t Americans ever to swing a leg over a racing motorcy cle. Only Dick Mann . Kenny Roberts. Bubba Shobert and Doug Chandler have ever wo n one each of a National road race, and National dirt tracks in mile. half mile. short track and IT competition . - Getting that mile and IT is going to be tough," Hayden said. "La st year at Del Mar. l ied it going into tum three and came up about a half a lap short of winning it. The IT is going to be tough. because I don 't know if I'll ever get to ride Peoria again. I'd like to . though. It woul d be really cool if I could do it. " The H-D of SacramentolWrenchead.com team of Chris Carr was sporting a new transporte r at Springfield. W ell. nol really. Seems that Kenny Tolbert and Travis Smith suffered a serious mechanical failure at 1 a.m. while heading from Dallas to Springfield. for cing them to abandon ship and rent a crusty U-Haul - which prom ptly blew a tire. causing further delays. The team jus t made it to the Short Track Shootoul before practice began. leaving Carr to comment: " If that thing breaks down tomorrow. they'd bett er be prepared to ride my bikes to the track ." Although he ultimately failed to get it into the feature. short-track connoisseur Terry Poovey immediately gave the thumbs-up to the layou t of the short track for the Springfield Short Track Shootout. even though it made the Daytona Short Track look like a half mile. The cushioned surface and short straightaway s promi sed plenty of bar-banging action. but Poovey was unfazed at the prospect. - I like it. - Poovey said. "lt 's small. but that's the way a short track ought to be ." Iron ically . the Texas short-trac k mast er missed o ut o n his cha nce in the main event wh en he failed to pass Mi ke Hacker fo r the win in the firs t semi. Speaking of bar-banging. the factory Ha rley -D a v idson M eam, MScott Parker and Rich King . t took a few friendly shots at each othe r. bumping and grinding their way around the tight track in the first pract ice sessio n. It was all in good fun. acco rding to King. "Scott kind of took my line away. so I just ran into him. - King said . gri nning. " I had to show him that I wasn't messing aro und . I ca me he re to wi n." Perhaps the biggest new s at the short track was the return of S teve Beattie. The Canadian. who suffere d a broken back at the May running of the Springfield Mile. was cleared to ride a few weeks prior to the Labor Day event. but he elected to not rejoin the circuit until after he had co ntested a couple of races in Canada first. He immediate ly got back into the swing of thing s by po sting a runner-up fin ish and a victo ry before rejoi ning his G ard ner Racing teamm ate D an Stan - ley at the Springfield Short Track. Alt hough he missed out on the main event . Beattie was not afraid to trade his share o f pai nt during the night's action. co mmenting : ulf I can survive this thing, tomorrow is go ing to be a cinch." Rich K i ng showed the spirit of a true sports man during the semis when Geo Roeder II dropped a chain while rolling out for the second eight-Iapper . With nothing to gain by it. King. who was watching the races from the outside of tum four. jumped into the fray to assist Geo Roeder Sr. in making repairs . The King/ Roeder combination got Geo II out just in time . He then came from behind to nearly run down Evans for a spot in the main event. W ith Brett Landes having reputation as a former Dayt ona Short Track winner who is at the sa me time not orious for getting less-than-stellar starts. it begged the que stion : Could Landes win the Spring field Short Track Shootout if he did not get the start? - I t hink so . " Landes said . " Everybody 's going to make mistake s. and if I can be at the right place at the right time. I have as good a shot as anybody. - Landes was right on one cou nt, but he actually slipped backward in the main event. ultimately finish ing seventh. - I worked my butt off out there." S c o tt Parker said after finishing 12th in the main event. " I got rolling out there for a while. but I went up high for too long" Ju st tryin ' something differ ent. - It didn't work this time. but trying something diffe rent would prove to be far kinder to Parker within the next 48 hours. Kenny Coolbeth strugg led all night long at the short track Regarded as an exceilent 600c c rider. Coolbeth wound up a disappointing last in the 16-rider ma rn, - W e just struggled all night long ," Coolbeth said. "Oh. well . we got some point s and we 'r e still in seventh. Tomorr ow is another day." Kevin Atherton was spotte d cruising around at the Springfield Short Track and was rumored to be gearing up to ride the Hall of Fame race the next day. " Yeah. and I saw Elvis last night. too . " Athert o n said when q uizze d about the po ssibility . " Yes, absolutely , I will be o ut there tomo rrow, I've been going crazy. and my doct or told me that I could come and race the motorcy cle . It' ll probably be another year before I'm 100 percent. but mentaily I feel great. I'm in shape. but I haven't been racing a dirt -tracker. either ." Lynch Racin g 's Paul Lyn ch is expe rie ncing a bit of a reawakening of his career, w hich was o n track back in 1997 . only to be cut short due to family issues that cost him his ride on his father' s equipment. But that' s over now . and the Maryland yo ungste r has enjoyed the best seaso n of his career in 2000 . He made another main event at the Short Track Shootout , ultimately finishing 13t h. " It' s like a 1OO-percent turnaround for us." Lynch said. " Instead of making only one main. like last yea r, we've only missed tw o this yea r. " Th i s win was special for me," Hayden (center) said o n the podium. " M y whole f a m ily was here to see me win it this time." J can' t co mplain. It' s just me and my dad doing all the bikes. That kind of makes me feel better. because I look down throug h the top 20 and I see that everyo ne else has got a tuner and a team. I'd like to be running in the top 10. We've been right there . We'll get it. " e ye ... n e vv 55 S EPTEM BER 1 3 . 2000 39
