Vi ctor th e m a i n eve nt , a s 16 th -pl a c e d 34 SEPTEM BER 13, 2000· cue I e n e uv s Though he was unable to recapture the magic of one year ago , Chris C arr was still able to put the Hall of Fame race into perspective for both fans and wo uld-be fans of dirt trac k racinq. " As far as this race is co ncerned, in its three-year short period . it has become our Indy 500 . This one event , with the highest ·paying purse , and now the points as wel l. makes it pretty specia l. but when yo u add in its hist orical value , I think that eve rybo dy here really wa nts to win this one today . " The Carl Patrick-built miler that Joe Kopp rode at Springf ield was sporting some rather techloo king pipes made by Bassani, an afte rmarkel exhaust firm that w as really en vogue during the '70s and '8 0s but has slipped into the backg round for the past 20 years . " This is C arl' s perso nal bike, ' Kopp said. ' It feels really fast. ' Nicky Hayden struggled on Satur day. blowi ng up his number-one machine and being forced onto a backup bike for the day 's events. Larry Pegram admitted that he could not wipe the grin off of his face when he was out in the draft once again. " You forget how much fun you have wh en y ou' re out there doing it.· Scott Parker has won the Springfield M ile 13 times . but wasn' t a factor today. ' It was one of those things , I was having trouble with the track: Parke r said. ' 1 couldn't get the bike to tum where I wanted to. it kept getling sideways and they we re getting away . We'll just go back . figure it out and hopefully come back better tom orrow. I think the bike was fast enough but the setup was off . I thought before the red flag we we re reel ing them in, but we made a cou ple of changes and I don 't know if helped or hurt . but we we re pretty much stuck whe re we were at ." Washington rider Dan Stanley suffered another terrible blow to his racing career when he tangled with Bryan Bigelow during a scra tch heat race and was thrown into the wa ll down the back straightaway . Stanl ey suffered fractures to the tw o ve rte brae below the rods that we re used to repair the spinal injury that he suffered during the Sacramento M ile last year . St anley ' s prog nosis for recovery was unknown. Where would the Hall of Fame race be without legends? Former Hartey-Davidson fac tory team manager Dick O'Brien was inducted into the Dirt Track Hall of Fame during a ce remony prior to the main event. beco ming the first non-rider to receive the honor, one whi ch "O B " said that he did not take lightly . Along with O 'Brien, former Dayt ona 200 winner Dick Klamfoth . A scot racing legend Sammy Tanner and former Harley-Davidson fact ory ride r Ceo Roeder were also inducted this year . Former AMA Grand National Champio n and Dirt Track Hall of Fame induc tee Mert Lawwill wa s on hand again at Springfield this year , not only to partic ipate in the fest ivitie s but also to get a littl e research in. as Lawwill is planning on re-entering the motorcycle chassis-building busines s. starting wit h dirt track frame s. • After 10 year s of doing World Cup downhill bicycle racing, I'm going to apply some of that technol ogy to this trade , and come out with a radically differentdesigned chass is," Lawwill said. " Anod izing. Inc. up in Portland, Oreg on , is wo rking on them with me. W e have a target date fo r the first one of December 1. " Lawwill said - get this · that his de sign will have two swinga rms.
