O livie r Jac que The second race where Michelin had qualifying tir es for all saw the final session end in somethi ng of a frenzy , Pole position changed hand s six tim es in the last 15 minutes alone. Prior to that the am azing Ju rgen van den Goorb ergh had ousted Kenny Roberts J r.. then in tum was oust ed by Max Biaggi. Th en in short order came Carlos Checa , twa m inutes later Tad ayuki Ok ada, then van den Gaorbergh again , Robert s again, and then Nobuatsu Aoki, about , as it seemed - to claim his fir st- ever pole positi on. And then, with 17 seconds left, came Garry McCoy , slatting into hi s first-ever pol e by almost four tenths of a second, with the ath er times pack ed up to with in tenths and hundredth s. "W e put a lot of effort into getting an the front row . I saw last tim e at Bmo how impo rtant the front row can be," said the entertaini ng Australian, who was only slightly less sideways an the super-sti cky qualifiers than he had been on race tire s. Lik e all the riders, he found the constant wind something of a probl em . "Sometim es it blows th e front , someti mes the back . You have to rid e dawn the middl e of th e tra ck to stay an the black stuff ," he said. Aoki stayed second, aft er his usual practi ce of hunting back and forth for co mfortable sett ings had ended wit h th e nat-unusual mov e of going back to what he had before. " Nobu operates a lot an feel, but often what feels goad isn't what is fastest," explained his crew chi ef Stu art Shent on . Van den Goorbergh was next, and quick to paint aut that putting his three-year-old Vtwin nat onl y on the front raw but - signi fic antly - the fastest of th e Hondas, had not been only due to the tires. "I was only a couple of tenths faster an them ," he said . "My corner speed is already so high." Roberts , by his own adm ission, didn 't get the most aut of th e qualifying tires , but was happy to be on the front raw , and said; "It' s more important to get the race set-up rig ht, and I'm happy with that. Ou r bike works pr etty well here." But oddly he and Aoki were the only riders cha nging gear in the m iddle of the track's last fast right-hande r, leading onto to front stra ight and an important key to a fast lap tim e. Technical guru Warren Willing explained; "Our rev range isn't as wide as the othe r bikes - we can 't get all the way roun d the re in one gear." Biaggi was left to lead the second row, with times close enough to reinforce the last race win ne r's confidence. "We've worked well , and I'm happy," he said . "Tonight we will co mbi ne the eng ine from one of my bikes. with the chassis from the athe r to make an even better race machine. " Okada was alongsi de, th ese times ultra-close, and the Ja panese rid er was crowing; "For the first time all season I feel good about my bik e. I'm surprised because usuall y I prefer fast co mers and here there are slow corn ers." On pole earlier , he insisted he had n't been an qu alifying tires at the time, and when he'd put them an, he hadn 't gone so well . Alex Barros came next, improv ing steadil y all weeke nd and still less th an eight tenths off pole position, and then Checa, also professing confi dence and looking smooth. Al ex Criville led the thi rd raw after slipping back from a stra ng start , and feelin g puzzled about it - the cham pio n was the first to be more than a second off pole - then came Regis Laco ni, who was visib ly try ing as hard as he cou ld, as his futu re emplo yment with Red Bull Yama ha becom es less and less certai n. Th en came Sete Gibemau, also slipping back. Last m an on row th ree was Valent ina Rossi, who didn't like the trac k and was having tro uble gett ing his settings right , nat to menti on runn ing off th e track when trying for a fast lap. " I am gett ing bett er - by Wednesday I' ll be ready for pale positi on ," he joked. Abe led row four from a troubl ed Lori s Capirossi, who fell twice aver th e twa day s. Th en J eremy McWilli ams battl ed to 15th with the injected Ap rilia, ju st two tenth s ahead of Mar k Will is in hi s first GP an the new Modenas. Tetsuya Harada' s carburete d Ap rili a led row five, the last factory bike - Jose Luis Cardoso was alongside as the best privateer. cycle n e 'IN' S S EPT EM B ER 1 3 _ 2000 11
