By the halfwa y m a rk of th e 16- lap mo to , the to p-five positio ns - Carmichael , Vuille min , LaRocco, Ferry and Albertyn - seemed to be firml y esta blished . Tortell i co ntinued his forward m ar c h , briefly swa pp ing positions with Honda teammate Windham be for e takin g ov er sixth . Whil e attempting to make up th e small gap between himself and Alber tyn , Tortelli ma de a costly mistake on the tra ck 's ultra -h igh speed "u p pe r" jump s ection, sending the Honda pilot to th e ground in a heap . "I was in a rut and the side was s t ic k in g out." e xp lained Tortell i. "I didn 't s ee it and it made me go s ideways. It was a b ig crash , but I fee l okay. I broke the bike - that was my fault. Nothing is wrong with m e , so I'll be 100 percent for the ne xt moto ." Ca rmichael took the checkers for the win, adding a full 25 points to his alrea dy com manding points lead of 40 over Tortelli. Vu illemin fin ish ed a strong second , followed by a solid ride from La Roc co for th ird . Albertyn was fo ur th , followed by Fe rry . Windham was sixth a nd Reynard finished sev e nth. Voss wa s eig hth , followed by the Factory Kawasakis of Ward and Dowd. Now with the leader square ly in his sig hts , Ca rmichael wasted no t im e , g o ing to wor k im mediately on Vu ille m in and taking over the lead just before Broome-Tioga 's massive, whoop -infested downhil l. By the completion of the first lap , Vuille m in a nd Ca rm ic ha e l h a d mov ed to the front, followed by Alb e rt yn , La Rocco a nd King . Again , Carm ic h a e l wasted no time taking ove r t he lead, divi ng under the Yam a ha of Vuille m in on the left-handed a pproach to th e t ra c k ' s jump -la den s upercross section. "I just squared the turn , soaked up th e jump and stayed low ," sai d Carmichael. "I had the ins ide line into the ne xt turn and was able to get by him ." On ce o ut front , th e determin ed Carm ich a el began to pull away at the pa ce of a few seconds per lap, desp ite a strong e ffo rt by Albertyn, who sliced past Vuillemin for the run ner-up spot on the fourth lap. "I was c ha rg ing the whole time ," sa id Albertyn. "I did get messed up a little bit by some lappers , which cost m e s o m e time , but wh o ' s to s ay I would have been a ble to pass Ricky eve n if I d id c atc h him? " Carmichael cr ossed th e finish line to s ecure his e ighth overa ll win of the s e ries - and h is fi r s t- e v e r 250cc Nationa l Motocross Championship. Albertyn cha rged in for second , follo we d by a strong a nd consistent ride by La Rocco for third. Re yn ard too k the measure of Vuillemi n la te in the ra ce fo r fourth . Tortelli finished s ixth, fo llowe d by Do wd in sevent h. Voss was eighth a nd Wind ham ninth. King rounded o ut the top 10 .
