LOS BANOS, CA, JULY 15 Yam ah a-mounted Brand on Jones was on a m ission at th e Los Bano s Fa ir grounds, and when he left , he left branded a winner after co m pleting his mission, taking both m ota vic tori es in th e 125cc intermediate cla ss during CMA Bounty Hunter Series racing acti on . Du rin g the first 125cc Intermediate m oto , J one s got into it right away with both 250cc Int ermed iate-class winner Billy Jurevich and hard -charging Robert Harold , on hi s Ed g e Sports-prepared Yamaha. Jon es took th e m easure of Ju revi ch , wh o later had problems and dropped to th ird , whi le Harold held tight to second. In the seco nd moto, a fierce battle erupted between J ones and Jurevich. Th e two wen t head to head down every straight and through eac h turn. The hea ted batt le kept the cro wd on it s toes and the pa rents chewi ng th eir fi n gernails as the two future Pros rac ed side by side righ t down to th e fi nal tu rn . Jones took the victory, aide d by hi s ability to pass som e of the slower Pro ri de rs, who had started on th e fir st wav e, during the fi nal lap. By doing this , Jones was able to use them as blo ck ers betw een himself and Jurevi ch through th e fin al few sect io ns of the course to secure the vi cto ry . Harold looked a bit tig ht in this moto , but he was sti ll able to salvage third. in front of J .R. Ar chutowski and Dylan Vich a. AC Racin g-ba c ked David M ead e swep t both 50cc (7 -9 ) and 6 0cc (0-8 ) B eg inner cl asses, wi nni ng all four motos of co mpetition . Th e Sou thern California rider said he found th e racing in N orthern Ca lifornia t o be a refres hing change an d the riders to be som e of the very best, Oustin Pipes, an other top local Mini racer , had a ni ght of ups and downs. First he won the first Bncc Nov ice moto, ahead of heavy favorite Broc Ow ens. Then he cra shed and flew over the handlebars in m oto two and had to be taken to a nearby hospital fo r stitches after gashing his nose . "Well, I was riding good tonig ht , but my bike k icked m e ov er th e tabletop ," Pipes recounted . " I had to get eight stitches, but 1 think I can still race some m or e tonight. " However, Pipes did sit out th e rest of the nig ht , while Owens went on to earn the 80 cc Novice-class vi ctory, in front of Andy 0 ' Arrigo and Bea u Wiega nd. Craig Tru glio was the night's top Pro racer, winni ng both the 125cc and 250 cc Pro classes with a fo ur- moto sweep. Truglio also had the ho nor of gelling t he last pick in the Bounty Hunt er race - an honor reserv ed for the racer with the night' s fast est lap times. Truglio did not seem worried, however, and passed his way th rou gh the night's 15 fastest racers to score a jackpot in excess of $700. Re sults Result s 64 B Y TONY A lESSI DREXEL, MO , JULY 23 After several lead changes, Mark Burghardt of Omaha, Nebraska, took his first overall vi ct o ry at the seventh round of the Forw ard Motion Hare Scra mble Series. On the sta rt of th e AA cla ss, Shrout Yam ah a ' s D an Burgard took th e hol e sh ot but crashed in the wh oops after two tu rns . Scott Harper took ov er and pulled awa y from th e pack, stre tching out a 15-seco nd lead on his YZ250 by the end of the first lap. Getting back o n the motocross co urse, Harper d id a big endo on a j um p . However, he was far eno ugh ahead to hold on to the lead. "I crashed ha rd and hit my head," Harper sai d. "I got up quick, but I wa s hurting too much to go fast." In the meantim e, Burgard was in overdrive and he passed the entire pa ck on la p t wo . Ha rper crashed again and pu ll ed out o f th e race. Freedo m Cycle's Ca rl Dobson held down second , while To peka KTM 's J im Brawner ran thi rd . By lap three , Burg hardt was gelling int o a rhythm and reeli ng in the front -ru nners. Bur gard developed a leak y radiator hose and had to make a p it stop . Harper, w ho wa s alr ead y ba ck in the pi ts , cam e to Burgard's resc ue . Being a go od sport, he off ered parts off hi s YZ250 to get Burgard go ing again - a gr eat gesture of sportsmanship, considering the two rid ers were lo ck ed in a po ints battle goi ng into the event. By lap fo ur, Brawner had his KTM 20 0 in first , with Burghardt i n h ot pursu it , Th ese tw o had battled early in the ra ce , but now thin g s w ere ge tti ng hot. Br awn er held t he l ea d fo r t h ree m o re lap s u ntil Bu rg h a rd t c harged pa st o n th e m oto cro ss po rt io n o f the course. "Mark was pu shi ng m e real hard," Braw ner co m m ented .
