The organization was great and there we re a good variety of sections- technical dirt sections. with steps and slippery creek sections. challenged t he riders without being overly dangerous. The only real complaint all year from some of the riders has been with the scoring sys tem. In 2000 the NATC/ AMA adopted the no-stop sys tem used in Europe. which has prov ed to be a litt le more difficult to score the riders with. Geoff Aaron commented afte r the event . " It's the same old problem with the checkers not knowing how to score it (the no-stop rules) and the riders taking advantage of that. There is a big gray area with the rules. and, although I love riding no-stop and I think no-stop is more fun, I definitely feel there is a bigger gray area. and it is harder for the chec kers to score it. The rule s a re kind of vag ue . and if it is a clos e eve nt, there is more chance for the rules to have an effect on the outcome ." A claimed 130 riders competed in the final two rounds of the year. which is a large number for a "s tand-a lone" eve nt such as this. Th is further reinfo rces the notion that the sport of O bserved Trials is pro spe ring in the ne w millennium. The only other rider to win six U.S. National Trials titles is Rya n Young who happens to be the curre nt Bultaco importe r for the U .S . and Ray Pe te rs ' team manager . C uriously. Pe te rs was a spoiler for Canadian Ryen Bell's title hopes. Bell needed two wins on the weekend and for Aaro n to finish outside the top five. Peters' win on Saturday eliminated Bell's chance for the title and guaranteed Aaron 's record tying sixth title. 10. Oli ver Clamagirand (34 ). cue I e n e vv s A UGUST 30 , 2000 25
