" Li g ht n in g " Le n ny M cBrid e survived two alt er cations in the Handicap final to no tch his first main-event wi n since returning to spee d way after a y ear long sabbatical. Th e li neup for th e Scratc h m ain had Bruce .. th e Mongoose " Nelson in o ne , Sephton in tw o , McBride in th r ee, " M ea n " Gene Bon signore in four and Ca m ..th e Kid " Rafferty on the ou ts ide. Sephto n got the initial j um p on the fie ld , but Bon signore h ad an awesome dr iv e o ff four. By th e apex o f th e tu m , Sephton had pulled to a clea r lead , with Nel son tuc k ing undern eath t o take second. O n the back stretch . McBride shot fro m last to third, lea ving Bonsig nore and Rafferty hanging on the outs ide line. For the next two laps, Sephton continued to lead but drifted slighUy. allowing Nel son to close , but Sephton held him off and crossed th e line first , with Nelson a cl ose sec· and. McBrid e was th ird, with Bonsignore and Raffert y rou nding ou t the fie ld . T he lineu p for t he Handicap m a in had Ca na dia n Gary Hesm er on th e 3D-ya rd line. On th e 4 0 were Jason Bonsign or e. Craig "the In sa n e" L an e an d Gen e B onsignore . Cra ig E st ell e wa s th e lone r id er on th e 50, with McBrid e back in th e "Moon Chute- on th e 70. Hesm er qui ckly assumed th e lead, with Gene second, J ason third and Lan e fourth. 'The first att empt was red -flagged after Bonsig nore went do wn on the back str etch wh en La ne made an inside move fo r thi r d . an d McBride laid his bike down to avo id Bonsignore. Th e second attempt wa s also red-flagged. Once aga in, an ori ginal resta rt was ordered. A s the tapes went up fo r th e th ird time, He. m er once aga in assum ed the lead. Gen e pull ed into second bu t parked off of tum two , ~ lIow i ng Lane to c om e unde rneath and ta ke th e position . Com ing out o f tum four on th e fir st lap , th e elder Bo nsign or e drifted , taking aw ay J ason ' s lin e and allowing McBride to pull into thi rd . Up at th e fron t, Hesm er co ntinued to lead, but Lane was stuc k on him lik e glu e. La ne cle arly had more spee d com in g int o the tu rns, but the for m er flat -tra cker hasn't qu ite m astered the exit. By th e en d o f lap fi v e.
