" Gardner Racin g /BBRP' s Dan Stan l e y got th e h ol e sh o t wh en t he 18 rider fi eld shot off the li ne to start the ma in event, with King barely in second over Schnabel and Noyes as th e W four rid er s scrambled aro und the fast cla y bank ed half mil e . S chn ab el mad e hi s way past Stanl ey and into th e lead on th e second lap, but th en bobbled in turn s on e and two, allow ing King to slip by . Th en wh en Schn ab el attempted to pull it ba ck down o nto t he g r o ove i n turn tw o , he bumped with Noyes. T he W isc on si nit e nea rl y bit th e dust after th e con ta ct, but he managed to gather it up a n d c hase aft e r K ing and No y es . A ft er K ing pulled clea r o f N o y e s , Schnabel caught his Californian riv al and put on a cle an pass to take sec o nd pl ace away fro m hi m on the last la p . " Sec o nd is go od ," Schnabel sai d. " I was ho p ing to wi n it , bu t Ric h got by m e , and t he n m e a n d K enn y [N oyes[ bumped, and he go t by me, so I had to try and get back by him. Noyes was a safe third . " I di dn 't ge t a v ery good start at all," Noy es sai d . " I w as lik e third o r fourth or som ething . Then I tried to k eep that same pa c e still , and the next thing I knew J .R. wa s on my ass, and he got by m e on the last lap ."
